Edmonton Fashion Jobs – Trends from Resort 2014

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

As the Resort season wraps, I’m inspired by glamorous designs and decadent accommodations imagined for 2014. Amongst a bevvy of trends hosted across the globe – everywhere from Singapore (Chanel), to Monaco (Dior) – I’ve curated a list of the looks that will surely last into Fall.

White on White
Seen at Giambattista Valli, Chanel, Alexander Wang, Givenchy, Chloé
White showed up in nearly every designer’s palette this season, as stark head-to-toe tonal looks. Riccardo Tisci took to white when he veered from patterns at Givenchy, and Alexander Wang chose a stark peplum skirt suit to swoon his minimalist fans and offset his unexpected bubble gum pink pieces. Nearly every designer showed all white ensembles, which, though typical for resort wear, still generated a fresh and sleek mood to the season.

She Wears the Pants
Seen at Chloé, Giambattista Valli, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Louis Vuitton
Trousers pervaded the looks of many important collections this Resort season in a noticeably different adage than usual. Valli and Givenchy both showcased skirts or dresses over trousers (a trend that will definitely influence upcoming designs), while Chloé, Calvin Klein and Gucci offered a luxe and relaxed Seventies silhouette. This balance of feminine and masculine is modern and refined.

The New Nautical
Seen at Marc Jacobs, Chanel, 10 Crosby Derek Lam, The Row, Louis Vuitton
Though nautical and resort wear seem like an obvious match, designers strayed from their usual oeuvres this season, offering a glamorous twist on the traditional stripes. Chanel and Marc Jacobs used metallic and sequins to accentuate the yacht inspired aesthete, while Louis Vuitton reimagined the classic in a jacket and trouser combination of tweed and leather.

Deconstructed Lace
Seen at Christian Dior, Chanel, Givenchy, Burberry, Louis Vuitton
Saccharine and sweet is lace, but right now, designers are deconstructing the French fabric for a contemporary vibe far off from the likes of Marie Antoinette. Full laser cut fabrics elevate traditional staples like trench coats at Dior and Louis Vuitton, or pencil skirts and trousers at Burberry and Givenchy.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Inspired by Prada Fall 2013

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Miuccia Prada’s womenswear collection for Autumn Winter 2013 captured the designer’s vision of “raw elegance” through disheveled glamour. Models strutted down the runways, hair unkempt and lips rouged, to a Hitchcock Heroine film noir music motif. The look juxtaposes high and low elements, where vintage silk slips pair effortlessly under tailored coats and luxe furs. Waistlines are nipped and shoulders exposed, riffing on Fourties’ style silhouettes. To channel Miuccia’s vision, pair plush pieces like Club Monaco’s faux fur vest over a simple black dress, or a rich leather skirt under a cable knit cardigan. Metallic embellishments add an edgy finishing touch here, transcending these ensembles between late night and early morning. As always, this Prada girl is modern, mysterious and perfectly undone.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Modern Minimalism

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

It’s no coincidence that countless of-the-moment designers reinvent themselves by going back to basics: take Raf Simons, the master of minimalism who recently landed Dior; Alexander Wang, who defined New York street style by way of basic T-Shirts, succeeding Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga; or Phoebe Philo, a woman who singlehandedly redefined power accessories for alpha females everywhere at Celine.

The most recent display of modern minimalism, however, is surely a product of Nicolas Ghesquière on the precipice of his departure from a fifteen-year tenure at Balenciaga. His Spring/Summer 2013 collection for the French house defined the beauty of sensuality found in simple contrasts: crisp suits or white shirts suddenly come to life when paired against flouncy skirts or cutout midriffs.

January is the perfect month to personify his minimalist iteration through unique basics. Add intrigue through details like unexpected cutouts, plush fabrics, or black and white juxtapositions. Who knew basic blouses, pea coats and blue jeans could be the antidote to January’s blues? Take a look at our twist on classic pieces that will keep you looking fresh until winter ends.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Game Changers: 2012 In Review

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

With the closing of 2012 and the launch into 2013, we are granted the chance of a clean slate, alongside endless opportunities for the New Year. Many of us are refilled with hope and joy for what may come of life next and we find ourselves reminiscing on the good and bad, hopefully the good has majority. While you style savvy’s are feeling nostalgic, take a look back with us at the biggest headlines in fashion news, from design house takeovers to shockingly desirable collaborations.

1. Androgynous Looks Breaking Society’s Boundaries

2012 blurred the masculine-feminine boundary, seeing more androgynous models grace crazy magazine covers and strut down runways then ever. That’s not the only gender-crossing change in our world of fashion; we are seeing more designer collections, which feature more masculine designs that please both sexes. Think Andrej Pejic, Karlie Kloss and Agyness Deyn. As for designers, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang and Derek Lam are primary influencers for this movement.

2. Raf Simons Move To Dior

Formerly the creative director of Jil Sander for 6 years, Raf Simons developed himself into a distinguished designer known for his experiment with shape and minimalist style. It broke news that the designer had bigger plans in store, moving to creative director at Dior, beating Marc Jacobs out of the running. Back in September, Simons was under intense pressure debuting his first ready-to-wear line for the label, in which he exceeded expectations.

3. Hedi Slimane Makes Changes to YSL

YSL. Three letters which flow so effortlessly off the tip of your tongue. Suddenly, we’re forced to reconstruct this combination to SLP and you’re stumped. Hedi Silmane, who was appointed creative director in March, not only renamed the company Saint Laurent Paris, but also the iconic logo that goes alongside. Saint Laurent Paris is now more muted and visually less appealing, but is reportedly just step one of the YSL makeover, leading into big changes to the collections.

4. The Wang Takeover: Nicolas Ghesquiere Leaves Balenciaga

It was first rumored to be Christopher Kane taking over the reins at Balenciaga, but the designer himself soon shot this down. It sparked controversy and much discussion over who would lead the design powerhouse and take over after Nicolas Ghesquiere announced his leave. In early December, we were notified that the young Alexander Wang, 28, would lead the label to new grounds. His modern touch and unlimited creativity leave us with high hopes for the new team. After all, he does have Karl’s approval, what else is needed?

5. H&M and the Big Leagues: Marni, Margiela & Russo

It’s no surprise that H&M loves a good collaboration, often combining fashion business concepts with the innovative creations from the best of the best in design. 2012 was the most successful collaborating year yet for the company with partnerships with Anna Dello Russo, Marni and Maison Martin Margiela. Russo’s exotic style remained prominent in the accessories line, incorporating high fashion taste on costume jewelry. Marni pleased us with bold graphic prints, while Margiela ended the year on an exaggerated note with oversized parkas and dresses.

6. The Legend of Anna Piaggi

Legendary Italian writer and style icon was pronounced dead in August at the age of 81. Despite her age, Anna was eccentric and full of life. Her surrealist outlook and high fashion meets punk glamour made her a favourite to many. Although she is no longer with us, her energy and passion can be felt at the front row.

7. The First Lady Sets A Fashion Example – With Obamas re-election, Michelle promotes affordable fashions

First lady, Michelle Obama, sure has become the focus of much media attention for her wardrobe selections and designer picks. However, despite living in the White House and having enough money to hold a closet full of Chanel, Michelle prefers to set an example. On re-election day in 2012, she sported a dress already worn twice before, proving to Americans that you can remain stylish during an economic struggle.

8. Grace Coddington Releases Memoir

Vogue’s creative director, Grace Coddington, released her memoir “Grace” just in time for the holiday season. Being second in command at the most prestigious fashion magazine, Grace takes us on a trip down memory lane and unleashes us into her life behind the scenes. Crediting The September Issue for being “the only reason anyone has ever heard of me,” Grace writes a compelling and insightful memoir, proving her longtime passion and commitment to her career.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Oxblood for the Holidays

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Oxblood. A descriptive word for a reddish brown color. Sounds a bit intense though, hey? Well whether the word gives you nightmares or not, these looks will be sure to fill you with joy and desire. Not only has oxblood been the color du jour all season, but what better time to experiment with it than during the holidays when rouge is all over the place. Why don’t we call it a, less assertive, more chic red? Whether its head to toe, or just a hint on your nails or lips, it definitely calls for attention with its rich, luscious hue that easily melts into any wardrobe. My personal favorite oxblood look right now? Denim – a super wearable, and well deserved change, and the perfect opportunity to fall in love with Canadian denim designer, Triarchy. So let’s be merry this time of year, in a variation that is much different than usual.

1. Tiarchy Denim, $248, available at Dutil
2. Chanel Le Vernis in Rouge Noir, $28
3. Velvet Gauzy Dress $140, available at Revolve

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – First Look: Fall 2012

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Keep an eye out for these key trends, inspired by the Fall 2012 runways, to update your wardrobe for the coming months.

(Left to right: Rag & Bone, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang)

Wrap Skirts

Wrap skirts are more modest than a mini but still show off a little leg, and their architectural flair adds playful visual interest to any outfit. Look for pieces in cozy wool or something silkier for a streamlined silhouette.

(Left to right: Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon, Monique Lhuillier)

Leather Love

Leather is always a popular look in the cooler months, and it was popping up everywhere this season from head to toe. Think jackets, tops, coats, and skirts for an ultra-sumptuous look. Red leather was also a favourite of designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon, and Monique Lhuillier.

(Left to right: Michael Kors, Naeem Khan, Jason Wu)

Gold Dresses

Shimmering, gilded gowns were the evening look of choice for several designers, including Michael Kors, Naeem Khan, and Jason Wu. Pair this trend with minimal accessories to let the pieces stand out on their own. It’s perfect for a night out with friends or any time you really want to shine.

Saskatchewan Fashion Jobs – Cool Chevrons

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

Add visual interest to your wardrobe by trading in your tired and true stripes for a chic chevron pattern. Reminiscent of Missoni’s signature print, zigzags and chevrons were included in designer collections such as Burberry, Carven, Christian Dior and Loewe, making it the most dynamic print of the season. Stripes will always be a classic go to favourite, but shake things up for spring with this angular, art deco inspired print to play on the geometric graphic trend and give your outfit some edge. Chevrons and zigzags are a prominent print that is uber-wearable and can be fun, playful, sophisticated or sporty if chosen in the right way.

Join the mod squad with a modern makeover by mixing chevrons and zigzags into your spring clothing!
