Lace traditionally embodies an overtly feminine aesthetic, but recently the fabric has become much more wearable, casual, and even edgy. For summer, it has showed up on everything from maxi-dresses, to crop tops and shorts, amplified by modern accents like scalloped edges or laser cutouts. No longer reserved for girlish glamour, the trend now takes on a more subversive vibe. Take a cue from Kate Bosworth, who rocked a head-to-toe white lace look at this season’s Coachella festivities. Minimally accessorized with ankle boots and aviators, the style muse looks equal parts boho and nouveau. Shop my favourite summer ready pieces below.

Yellow is a standout shade that instantly draws the eye, so it can be a bit tricky to work into your wardrobe. Pale yellow is infinitely wearable, while bright, richly pigmented yellows are a bolder choice. Because it’s such a noticeable colour, you must choose the other shades of your outfit with care. Black on yellow immediately screams bumblebee or taxicab, but white and denim perfectly offset yellow’s bright nature. Choose a standout piece like a shirt or sundress, or add a small pop of colour with yellow accessories. Either way, you’re sure to shine under the sun.

Us west coasters have a laid back persona and it reflects in our style. Given the mild, yet tempestuous climate of the Pacific Northwest – the sun is out one minute, and it’s raining the next – layering is key. We generally combine function and form for durability (you never know where you’ll end up outdoors!), so looks tend to be versatile and casual – a kind of undone glamour that’s less structured than our eastern counterparts. Think a mild twist on the California girl: Lauren Conrad, Kate Bosworth, Rumi Neely, or Diane Kruger. Staple fabrics include breezy silks, distressed denim, and soft jersey knits for relaxed silhouettes; leather jackets toughen up floral frocks, and silk blouses dress up denim cutoffs. Outfits work overtime to take you from a bike ride on the seawall, to brunch with your grandmother, to dinner and drinks on a first date. See my essentials that capture the bohemian spirit of the west coast woman.

Slips, camis and seamless bodysuits are all often forgotten essentials to the outfitting process. These layering items are integral to providing the right support and look to any number of outfits, especially in the summer, when fabric tends to be particular sheer.
When finding that perfect slip for your favourite summer dress, you have a couple of options. Most slips tend to be seamless, which works best for layering. Silk is often the best fabric for slips since it tends to hang loosely and is slippery against most cotton fabrics that are widely used in summer apparel. For silk dress slips, Aritzia carries a few options that are reasonably priced, starting at $65.
Seamless Spandex/Nylon body-hugging slips are also a popular option and provide support and body contouring in addition to their layering use. Free People offers a number of seamless slip option, my favourites being the Seamless Mini and Seamless Romper.
Transitioning certain summer pieces to the office can often be tricky, but with the right cami, it can be a piece of piece of cake. Basic seamless tanks offer additional coverage, like American Apparel’s Baby Rip Tank Top, in either racerback or spaghetti strap options. For a daintier look, try a lace & silk combination tank top like Dolce & Gabbana’s ultra-feminine version. Similarly, half-slips work fantastically under office skirts, and lace trimmed ones, like Ruche’s tiered version, offers up a bit of interest and added detailing. From basic to lacey and girly, layering pieces are a definite spring/summer necessity.

With SXSW kicking off the festival circuit this past week in Austin and Coachella’s double-header festivities a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about festival season. Depending on where you’re headed, the weather can be slightly tumultuous: sunny days and chilly nights in the Gorge at Sasquatch, blistering heat in Palm Springs at Coachella, and humid days in Montreal at Osheaga all call for layered looks.
I love Free People’s easy embellished basics – somehow the label manages to make jersey tees and skirts look flattering and unique. Paired with a few great accessories, they can go a long way.
Ikat is another big print this season, which fits in nicely with the festival theme. Be sure to take an anorak or poncho, plus a scarf and boots to combat evening chills or double as a picnic blanket, barrier for mud, etc. Peruse my picks below to prep you (rain or shine!) for some bohemian clad adventures and seriously awesome tunes.
1. ASOS Western Heeled Ankle Boots, $49
2. Free People Scrunch Skirt and Easy Breezy Tee, $39 and $60
3. TNA Otago Blouse, $75, available at Aritzia

5. Aldo Brigida Sandals, $60
6. Karen Walker Super Duper Sunglasses, $255, available at Aritzia
7. Free People Ikat Short, $84
8. ASOS Heart Shaped Glasses, $21

Transitional dressing between seasons can be dismal, especially post-holidays, so I was delighted when I came across See by Chloé’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection for mid-season fashion inspiration. In its third season, the contemporary womenswear label featured a more effervescent approach to its usual bohemian aesthete, through the use of metallic sheen. The result? A collection that felt simultaneously retro and modern, where quilted metallic bomber jackets and silver ankle boots stand up against sixties inspired maxi dresses, slouchy pant-suits and silk chiffon frocks.
Paris’ diffusion label wasn’t the only brand to recently showcase metallic. Holographic hues and iridescent embellishments showed up on various resort shows, and most notably, Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 13 RTW collection. To invoke instant insouciant cool-girl chic a la Stella and Chloé, opt for small pops of sparkle, and the trend will speak for itself.

For the past few seasons, florals have been making a comeback into sartorial trends in a big way. Designers are restructuring the often over-used pattern and modernizing it, using it to add pops of colour to structured garments, or as a subtle way of feminizing otherwise typically tough apparel – for example, Dr. Martens floral patterning on their classic 1460 boots. Whatever way you choose to wear this blossoming trend, don’t be afraid of taking a risk. “This season is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and being brave with your fashion choices,” says Free People Toronto Assistant Store Manager, Sam Boudreau. “Florals and prints are huge for Spring, so why not be bold and wear them together? Throw on a cute floral dress and layer it with your favourite striped sweater to stand out from the crowd,” adds stylist April Wilder. Take a look at some of our favourite floral pieces for spring that will surely inspire you to add some flower power into your wardrobe.

2011 had it’s fair share of memorable trends (think long skirts, stacked bracelets, and fur vests) but one trend that seems to be breezing into 2012 is the buttoned up collar.
Whether it’s a subtle white oxford under a cable knit, or a bejeweled creation over a LBD, collars are the best trend to hit the streets in years because of their versatility; Blogs are abundant with the sartorially-inclined finding new ways to incorporate the trend. And ladies, be ready to wear this in a myriad of ways, this trend comes with a medley of options; from prim peter pan collars, to the over sized and pointy, to great detachable varieties.
So get your collars poppin’ and be street-style ready in the season’s newest trend.
