Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Chic Investments

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

Several of my close friends are embarking on new and exciting chapters in their life like marriage, babies and new careers, and are finding it super important to invest in the right fashion pieces that will last the test of time without cracking the nest egg to do so. I am constantly asked what are key items to splurge for and what to pass on. Today’s fashion is ever evolving and heavily rooted in trends that can pass in a blink of an eye, so I suggest going with chic classics from reputable retailers.

No matter what the season, you’re always going to need a practical coat, and yes this still can be fashionable, but remember one of the major factors to a favorite article of clothing lasting the test of time is colour and design. Step outside the comfort zone of black and venture into a shade of navy, tan, military green, or grey in a classic trench that has the versatility of a detachable-hood or the ability to roll up the sleeves in warmer months. Other great pieces to invest in include a multipurpose handbag like Marc by Marc Jacobs Too Hot To Handle Tote that is functional for day, evening and even as a diaper bag. A structured business suit that can be worn as separates also allowing the blazer to be styled with denim for a casual day with the girls or the trousers to pair perfectly with a flowy blouse for date night. Last but certainly not least, and probably one of the items we often forget to splurge on is a good fitting bra and panties set, we all know the ladies deserve to be handled with care, and a good support system brings your whole look together and can properly smooth lines and give you comfort in anything you choose to wear in between these chic investments.

1. Zara Double Breasted Raincoat, $119
2. Marc by Marc Jacobs Too Hot To Handle Tote in Cardamom, $528
3. Banana Republic Pant-suit in Blue lightweight wool, $240
4. La Perla Donna Elenora Push-up Bra, $295

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Snow White

Monday, January 14th, 2013

White in fashion has always carried a bad rep, it is either you love it or hate it, but honestly, the color is not for every body, so choose your pieces wisely. We have all seen the dreaded too tight white pant or the token ‘wet white tee’ contest! In fact, white is a classic basic that can really be chic if worn properly and I think we can thank winter fashions for doing so. Layering cream colored knits with printed pants or a sophisticated winter white peplum dress can really be a lovely style statement. When the weather is a bit drab, it can really brighten up an outfit and maybe even someone’s day! Take a chance on white this winter, your wardrobe will thank you for it!

Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide for Dad

Friday, December 14th, 2012

Shopping alongside your Father can be an interesting occasion in itself, but actually shopping for your Father, is on an entirely different level of excruciating pain. The thought of shopping immediately puts them in a less than pleased mood and has them doing their own impersonation of Scrooge’s “bah humbug”. If your Dad is anything like mine, you know that he would much rather stay in his comfy abode and wish the entire holiday stress and madness goodbye. When you ask him what he would like for Christmas, he shrugs, giving a mediocre grunt and then continues on with the task at hand. But don’t fret! I’ve chosen some versatile picks suitable for any kind of Dad – the businessman, sports lover, the next Bobby Flay, etc.

No, these gifts aren’t the usual cliché tool sets, steak knives or sports gear. These gifts are the kinds that have him smiling Christmas morning and abandoning his Turkey dinner to test out the new toys. Bond with him while playing a TV show themed board game over some morning Espresso. Here are my best 10 picks for your old man, with budget in mind!

1. Viktor & Rolf ‘Spicebomb’ Eau de Toilette, $78, available at Nordstrom
2. Fossil Mechanical Twist Stainless Steel Watch Black, $155
3. Chapters Whiskey Rocks, $24.99
4. Wireless TV Headphones, $65, available at Brookstone
5. Afire Gourmet Smokin’ Steak Set, $20
6. Banana Republic Extra-fine Merino Wool Crew-neck Sweater, $74
7. Sunbeam Manuel 15-Bar Espresso Machine, $90, available at Kitchen Stuff Plus
8. Chapters Moose Bookend Set, $35
9. Dexter Board Game, $29, available at Costco
10. Sherwood Canby Rosewood & Maple Grey Polarized Sunglasses, $250

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – With Love, from Russia

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Over the Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks, the Russian fashion elite, deemed by the New York Times as the ‘Russian Fashion Pack’, dominated street-style blogs due to their opulent ensembles and zany choices – think wild prints, brocade, fur, jewels, hair accessories and killer shoes. The look has already transpired well into fall, see our post on baroque, but hot on the heels of the holiday season’s epic blockbuster, Anna Karenina, the Russian-inspired aesthete has blown-up. If this highly anticipated cinematic adaptation, which spawned it’s own capsule collection at Banana Republic, turns out anything close to last year’s obsession with Lisbeth Salander, this look is here to stay.

The Tolstoy classic has been reimagined, chock full of dreamy designer pieces from vintage Dior to Chanel. It also marks the acting debut for model of the moment and Karl Lagerfeld muse, Cara Delevigne, featured above in Chanel’s resort campaign. I love Karl’s dreamy take on the look, his pastel hued version of the Chanel tweed jacket, mixed with silk and feathers is to die for. I love the modern whimsical take on the troubled ingénue.

3. Holt Renfrew Faux-Fur Scarf, $55
4. Valentino Studded Leather Pumps, $995, available at Net-a-Porter
5. Club Monaco Kiera Beaded Skirt, $249
6. Haute Hippie Lace Metallic Leggings, $294, available at Shopbop

8. Banana Republic Beaded Clutch, $90

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Trick or Treat

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Dressing for Halloween doesn’t necessarily mean you need to throw on a costume and wig as you try to convince people you are the latest reincarnation of Morticia Addams. An equally fun approach is to take all the trappings of Halloween (skulls, leather and spiders oh my!) and spin them into an outfit that will be more of a treat than a trick.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Wonder Woman’s Cape

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

If your arms are cold due to the lack of sleeves (understandable), take a cue from the Wonder Woman fashion guide and throw on a pair of long gloves. You might not be saving the day super-hero style, but you will definitely look good.
