Fashion Jobs – Camping Essentials

Sunday, May 12th, 2013

Camping season is upon us – it is the perfect opportunity to escape the bustling city and revel in the great outdoors. When packing for a weekend getaway, try to only bring the necessities. You won’t need a lot of accessories to spruce up your outfit because you will mostly be gallivanting in gingham and a bathing suit. Make sure to bring a rain coat just in case the unspeakable happens so you can still have a good time. Say hi to mother nature for me!

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Swimsuit Season

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The increasingly lovely weather in the past few weeks across the country has signalled summer’s imminent arrival. Summer typically fashion has a laid back feel; flowy maxi dresses, denim cut-offs, oversized tees. One important part of summer fashion that is sometimes overlooked is finding the right swimsuit and related accessories. Swimwear often reflects trends that we see on the runway, and in recent years, more brands and large retailers are offering their own versions of beach wear.

This year, the trends in swimwear are continuing the “bolder is better” motto from the last few years. Cut-outs were a big trend on the runway for Spring/Summer ’13, working their way into oversized tees, and dresses. The itty bitty Eagle Shadow Bikini from Australian brand One Teaspoon is an example of this trend carrying over to swimwear.
Graphic prints and bold, colourful patterns are also quickly becoming a prominent trend in beach wear this season. Wildfox offers many different variations of this style, with one pieces featuring everything from graphic animal prints to the Union Jack.

For beach goers looking for something more feminine, check out the bohemian inspired crochet one pieces from Lisa Maree. These ornate, lacey bathing suits are not what you typically think of when you think swimwear, and are definite standout pieces.

A great cover-up and beach towel are as important as the swimsuit itself. For a real taste of California beach lifestyle, check out Jen’s Pirate Booty. Her beautiful, ethereal garments can function both for a day at the beach and also as a dress for drinks afterwards. For an out of the ordinary beach towel, Lauren Moshi`s illustrated hippie-girl towel is a great option.

2. Wildfox French Flowers Kitty Lovelock Ruffle One Piece, $188
3. Lisa Maree Crochet Monokini, available at Free People, $151
4. Jen’s Pirate Booty Beach Bum Kaftan, $132

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – What to Pack for a Tropical Trip

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

With March around the corner, Spring Break is in the air and many of us are packing our bags for a holiday in the sun. Packing can cause quite the conundrum (for me, it’s narrowing down shoes), but to beat the heat, the old adage ‘less is more’ applies. The key is versatility: your items have to work double time to take you from the beach to cocktail hour. I’ve narrowed it down to twelve holiday essentials to make packing a breeze:

A dress that will take you from day to night: As an LA based label, PJK makes great pieces for the sun, and this dress is no exception. Part of the exclusive collaboration with the Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, this cream frock is a poly silk blend to flatter your figure and maintain your cool.

Sunglasses: A great pair of shades are a must-have for anyone (fashion oriented, or not) and Karen Walker’s shades are as glam as you can go. A favourite of Atlantic-Pacific’s Blair Eadie, these gems take basic beach attire to the next level.

Beach Cover Up: Tunics are an essential piece to pack. They can stand-alone and still look good.

A Floppy Hat: SPF is only one way to protect your skin from the sun, so a wide brimmed hat is both functional and fashionable.

A Good Beach Tote: Club Monaco’s preppy resort collection offered a plethora of great items this season, and the balance of Breton stripes and paisley print on this tote, is equal parts bohemian and nautical.

A lightweight blouse: Finding a versatile shirt that works in humid climates is hard to come by. This piece by Zara will match with shorts or high-waisted skirts, and pair well under a denim jacket.

A cozy wrap: Even hot climates can get chilly, but this Community Ionic Cape has got you covered for chilly evenings and air-conditioned plane rides.

Denim Jacket: Jackets can take up a lot of room in your suitcase; so if you need to narrow it down, choose a cropped denim piece. They pair well over dresses or shorts for sightseeing or evening cocktails.

A printed scarf: Accessories are easy ways to transform your outfit (especially if you are re-wearing the same pieces).

A Bikini: Presumably, you won’t narrow it down to just one, but if you do, opt for a strapless piece to save you from bad tan lines. This season, ruffles are big, and coming in around $100, this suit tops the trend at a reasonable price.

A pair of cuffed shorts: While cutoffs are an easy piece to pack, opt for durability when packing shorts. The Dillon style from T. Babaton will take you to the city, the beach or the bar.

A pair of wedges or espadrilles: Essential to take you to cocktail hour. Wedges are easy and they match well with almost everything, plus they offer comfort too.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Beat the January Blues

Monday, January 14th, 2013

The New Year is officially in full swing and we are finally calming down after celebrating all of December’s holiday festivities. With Christmas out of the way, it is amazing how fast we allow ourselves to fall into a depression and are already moping that there is nothing to do in January. There is nothing really to look forward to until, well, spring! Already, everyone is starting to crave sunshine and long weekends away with friends but it’s still ages away. I now truly understand why some of our grandparents turn into snowbirds and fly off down south for a few months right after the New Year. For those of you who are lucky enough to escape, here are some essentials before hopping on that plane. And for the rest of you, including myself, there is nothing wrong with buying a few things ahead of time. It’ll keep you preoccupied and before you know it, spring will be here. If you get really impatient buy a few a blow up palm trees, set up a few towels on the ground, lie down and close your eyes. Your imagination will become your ultimate getaway!

Everyone needs the perfect tote to pack their essentials for the plane. I personally like to carry a few extra pieces in my totes incase my luggage is lost or is accidentally thrown onto another plane. This tote by Sneha Varma is the perfect carry on and can also be used as a weekender bag.

Speaking of packing extra pieces in your carryon, I always like having an extra bathing suit with me. If there is one thing I hate, that’s not having something to swim in the minute I arrive at a resort. Once I’m checked in, I go straight for the beach and sun bathe as much as I can before heading out for dinner and cocktails. This bright yellow two-piece by Miu Miu will add even more extra rays on the beach.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of beach bags only because I have a tendency to get too much sand inside. For me, the simpler the better. Baggu is great for making fashionable but durable bags for the beach. I personally like the sailor stripes but you can buy them in many different colours from neon to electric poppy.

We all need that perfect dress to throw over our bathing suit, or, if you’re like me, use your dress more than once on a vacation. If you’re on a budget, but of course, you still want to be very fashion forward on your trip, this adorable mint and white ditsy floral surplice dress from Forever 21 is the way to go. I have definitely gone past those days when I needed to have a different dress for every night when going out with my girlfriends while away. Now, it’s all about smart packing and to be honest, we all know to buy dresses to wear more than once if we can. Resorts are the perfect places to repeat a look a few times. You’re there to relax and wearing something twice or even three times will not be considered a crime, trust me!

1. Sneha Varma Tote, $265
2. Miu Miu Bikini, $245, available at Net-a-Porter.com
3. Baggu, $13, available at eLuxe.ca
4. Forever 21 Dress, $20

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Swimsuits For Your Figure

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

Don’t be afraid of swimsuit season, ladies. There are swimsuits for every figure, and amazing cover ups too! Right now I love the selection of suits that Anthropologie carries, and the Gap always has great mix and match pieces. Take a look at what swimsuit would be best for your frame.

Calling all curvy girls, this swimsuit is great for tucking everything in at the beach. The slight ruching in the middle makes my tummy look long and lean, and the halter top holds everything in. Love the vintage style of this swimsuit, perfect with a wide brim hat and some oversized vintage shades.

If you’re apple shaped, consider wearing a suit like this. It looks more like a romper, with a bit more room on the top and has a drawstring that ties at the waist to add more shape to your figure. I know that a strapless suit may seem counterproductive, but this one has good coverage.

If you’re pear shaped (like me), then this two piece suit would work. Us pear shapes sometimes feel like we need more coverage on the bottom because of our figures, but getting those high cut boy shorts can take away from the length of the leg, accentuating the parts we don’t want to accentuate. A low cut bikini bottom that has enough coverage in the back in a soft solid colour is the best way to go, try to steer clear of bold patterns on the bottom.

If you’re straight-figured, then the best way to fake those curves is this patchwork suit. It has a band in the middles that offers a faux hourglass figure and adds balance to the body. The patches in the middle also give the illusion of length, so if you’re petite and straight this is a great option for you. The sweetheart neckline with moulded cups gives a little more curve up top too.

1. Dolly Gingham Maillot Suit, $168, available at Anthropologie
2. Arvette Maillot, $158, available at Anthropologie
3. UV Rays Bikini, $59 and $79, available at Anthropologie
4. Sweetheart Patchwork Maillot, $218, available at Anthropologie

Anthropologie locations in Canada are as follows, though some of the above items are online exclusive.

Anthropologie Vancouver located at: 2912 Granville Street (South Granville)

Anthropologie Toronto located at 80 Yorkville Ave, or 19 Clock Tower Road

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Just Add Water

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

These swimwear sensations take style spotting straight off the runway and onto the beach. Just add water to take the plunge into the hottest trends of the season.

Animal Instinct: Use your animal instinct and show off your wild side while soaking up the sun in a safari print swimsuit. This exotic Emilio Pucci one-piece is sure to make a splash with its ultra-flattering knot and ruching effect.

Picture Perfect: Look picture perfect in paradise with this D&G tropical suit. Digital prints were hot off the runway this season and now you can add a touch of photorealism to your beach escape.

In Bloom: Spring into the season with fresh florals. A vintage pin-up cut suit gives an ode to the retro revolution on the runway. Mixing both retro and floral print adds a flirty, feminine touch, which encompasses this vintage trend. The retro revolution translates into the realm of swimwear with a balconette bra and high waisted briefs’, providing an instant tummy tuck for your beach bod and enhances your curves in all the right places.

High Tide: Take a dip into the scuba trend. As the seaon’s swimwear uniform, scuba style is evenly matched as a sporty and sexy minimalistic suit statement. This figure hugging suit is sure to help you ride out the waves of summer, after all no one sports neoprene quite like Lisa Marie Fernandez.

Banded Beauty: Strap into body-con for the ultimate sultry swimsuit. The key to wearing this suit is all about the fit. Buy it too tight and you’re certain to get spillage, buy too lose and risk having it swept off in the ocean. Remember comfort and style can be synonymous.

Which swimwear trends will you be making a splash in?

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Garden Love

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Flowers: bright, cheery, and hitting retailers again this year. Florals are here to stay, and there are some specific tips for those of you who aren’t big into pattern but are willing to change things up this spring/summer.

Tips: Here’s the thing about floral print, not all prints will be right for you. If you’re bottom-heavy, try to avoid floral denim unless it’s in dark tones. If you’re top-heavy, you should avoid bold printed floral blouses. The 70s inspired floral pattern is the ‘It” floral this year. A few of years ago it was all about the ditzy floral print, but these days, the bolder, the brighter, the better. Always remember to keep it simple ladies, a bold floral means simple accessories and not too much pattern mixing, soft stripes and small polka dots will work, in small doses!

Have fun with the bright colours this year, and check out the listed retailers for a beautiful arrangement of floral patterned pieces. Green thumb not required, but your eye for style is!

1. Citizens of Humanity Floral Thompson, $185, available at Anthropologie
2. Bordered Lobelia Bikini, $78, available at Anthropologie

3. Fluro Foral Print Corset, $58, Topshop

4. Chiffon Wrap Cami, $25, available at American Eagle

5. Fiesta Mini Dress, $118, available at Free People
