I’m always inspired by Joe Zee’s posts for ELLE – he has an intuitive and witty approach to styling various occasions’ different ways. His outfits cover everything from baseball games, to first interviews or mom time, which got me thinking about how to style various activities for Summer. In the coming months, long weekends compose many of our mini escapes, and whether a weekend away means jetting to New York, Toronto, or Seattle, or hitting your country cottage or cabin, you will inevitably want to compose a look that meets the needs of your chosen locale. I’ve dreamed up two juxtaposing ensembles for two disparate trips – one for the sightseeing city vacation, and the other for country living. See my picks for each respective jaunt to ensure you are one happy camper, or happy city dweller.

In response to last week’s post on west coast style, I’ve scoured the racks to find pieces that fit the aesthetic of the east coast girl. While west coasters thrive on undone glamour, our eastern counterparts are heavy on crisp classics. Looks are slightly more tailored, and put together – take a cue from style maven Olivia Palermo who never seems to get it wrong (don’t miss her video for the Outnet here.) While she exudes easy style, not unlike California girls Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth, she focuses on timeless essentials like Breton striped blouses, tailored trenches, A-line skirts and stiletto pumps. Easterners always seem to have a more cosmopolitan air about them compared to west coast girls, a more structured look, and it shows head-to-toe.

As we head into April and warmer temperatures grace us with their presence, we’re feeling motivated and determined to finally crawl out of our winter blues. Spring is the time of the year for growth and rebirth, and that doesn’t just include within our environment; it means us too! Ladies, it’s time to let that skin breathe and opt for shorter lengths to shed some light on your skin.
The great thing about this must-have spring trend is it’s short yet reasonable length that will even be appropriate for the office! The short suit offers a classic tailored look with a modern edge, especially when paired up with other common trends for spring such as bold graphics, pastels, or jewel tones! You can also mix and match tops and bottoms, or create a more eccentric look by mixing contrasting textures.

How many times have you opened up your closet and said to yourself ‘I have nothing to wear!’ This age old saying to us fashion-hoarders seems natural to become sick of your clothes in an ever-evolving trend-centric industry. Start off 2013 not by going on a diet, but purging the closet and holding on to basic staples that you can incorporate into several seasons worth of wear. Start with 3 piles, the keep, toss and donate, the latter being of great importance. Just because it is no longer on your it-list, doesn’t mean others do not covet it. Keep essentials that last the test of time, including basics like a classic single-breasted blazer, your favorite pair of denim, v-neck tees, anything striped, and that custom motorcycle leather jacket. Toss items that you have worn with too many unwanted holes in them and items that are simply overused. Donate anything you bought on a whim, still with the tags on that your mother-in-law bought you two Christmas’ ago, or is just down right out of date. Consigning is a great way to go because you can turn your clothes into cash and use it wisely to re-stock your wardrobe for upcoming seasons. I recommend doing this each season. Spend less on trend items and invest in the key staples, recycle out older items each season and you’ll never be bored! Out with the old and in with the new you this New Year!

Fall runways invoked painterly sensibility and dapper dandy with matching prints at the likes of Prada and Marc Jacobs. While Miuccia frequently sets the trendsetter status quo, this printed partnership is here to stay. Just look to Marc Jacobs’ Spring collection for innovation. He adopted the style with mastered double takes on checks and stripes. Don’t fear these brazen and bold prints – try full-on brocade, paisley or geometric numbers in skirts, pants and sweaters. We’ve got you covered head-to-toe with these punchy pieces.

Tailored, classic and wear-with-everything effortless, the return of the double-breasted coat for the Fall 2012 season was a welcomed staple on the menswear runways. With updated variations featuring military inspired lapels, gold buttons reminiscent of our prep school days, and contrast piping, the traditional pea coat, trench and blazer cuts in stand-by cold weather colors reminded us that all trend influence aside, if ain’t broke, don’t mess with it. Pair your double-breasted jackets with denim and a t-shirt for a put-together weekend look, throw an oxford underneath to kick up a notch, or layer with a suit during the work week. Either way, line up your buttons and you’re good to go.

Luckily for some of us, September just marks a new season and not a return to hitting the books. Having said that, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about academia inspired dressing, that has even us graduates taking on the collegiate style. To keep the whole look from veering into preppy overkill, opt for streamlined pieces like a fitted blazer with piping, skinny chinos, and a classic white button down. Pair them effortlessly with a colourful satchel, patterned smoking flats and classic jewelry – after all, this isn’t algebra, it’s just fashion.

Call your best gals, grab your cutest skirts and sandals, and hit the town. There’s a lot to do in Vancouver, especially in the summer.A night (or day) on the town could mean an outdoor margherita on Bridges patio, a delicious glass of wine at the Alibi Room, or a picnic at Kits beach.
Wear something sweet, simple, and bright for summer. You want to be comfy enough to walk 4th ave or Main, and dressed well enough to grab a drink at the Boathouse. The cropped blazer is a great piece to take a casual look into a nighttime appropriate outfit. Flat sandals are comfy enough to walk around in, but cute enough to wear out. The oversized handbag is sleek enough for the evening, and big enough for a small bag of makeup and a scarf in case it gets a little chilly. You don’t need to wear athletic gear to be comfortable ladies, it’s all in the details.
