Fashion Jobs – 20’s Cinematic Style: The Great Gatsby

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Flapper girls adorned in embellished gowns to the nines, alongside rich vintage accessories, gallivanting with ease over some popped bubbly. Envision yourself amongst the party crowd, as the eye of the man of the hour himself, Gatsby. This coming Friday, May 10, it’s time to hold your own elaborate affair behind the screen, and join the talents of Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton as they recreate the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gastby. The compelling tale unveils both love and tragedy, luring us to time travel back to wealth in the 20’s. Just when you thought your star gazed eyes couldn’t get any wider…it’s in 3D.

Costume designer, Catherine Martin, selected 40 stunning vintage Miu Miu and Prada cocktail designs from the time, which are on exhibition to the public at Prada flagship stores in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai until mid-July. Jewelry and headpieces were custom designed by the one company who best represents the films royal ora best, Tiffany & Co.

Here’s how to play a more formal version of dress up, to wear to a movie night out with your girlfriends, or a media screening party. Top one of them off with an elegant headpiece and Mary Jane pumps, and they’ll be more eyes on you than Leonardo (if that’s at all possible).

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Emily Woudenberg

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Last month, The Black Box Boutique in Yorkville had a fantastic trunk show featuring the latest from Toronto designer Emily Woudenberg. This season’s inspirations came from the art deco period – by far one of my favourite periods from the 20th century. Self-taught and with a background in graphic designer, Emily’s androgynous style has caught the attention of many including Elle Magazine’s Creative Director Joe Zee, and has received many awards including the 2012 Passion for Fashion Award. The “Paragon” (meaning immaculate diamond) collection expresses eclectic and luxurious qualities from the 1930’s movement.

Her twelve pieces capture the essence of the contrast between extreme frivolity and somber frugality. Woudenberg has only just begun her career but these custom pieces are absolutely to die for and I can’t wait until her next showing.

5. Emily Woudenberg Vertex Ring, $62

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Colour Crush

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this year, nurture a budding spring love affair by falling all over again for my all time favorite trend of the season: pastels! For the past few years we have seen a fresh emergence of chalky colors in denim and I have to say I am not quite over this trend quite yet, in fact it is only becoming more loveable and versatile. Try tone-on-tone muted prints in a fun pedal pusher, paired with pastel florals-of-plenty ripe for the picking on the top-half in a girly cardigan or flowy blouse. If you’re a little reserved and classic in your approach to adding colour into your daily drab, take baby steps in the relationship and try a versatile utility bag for day or a pop of color in a belt or bangles layered up on your wrist. Sometimes all you need is to take a chance on something new to find true love in a new trend!

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and for most of us, there’s a last minute scramble to get something unique and meaningful for that special someone. When one typically thinks of “love jewellery”, diamonds and little blue boxes immediately come to mind. Sometimes the best gifts, and therefore the most sentimental, come from unconventional places. Etsy, for example, is becoming a great place to find affordable pieces that are hand crafted by small artisans. Vintage jewelry is also a burgeoning trend for online shoppers keen to find something timeless. With that in mind, here’s our list of distinctive love jewellery for this Valentine’s Day.

Fashion Jobs – Jewellery a la Français!

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Combining both her French and Canadian inspirations together, Montreal based designer, Jessica Hofman, has been very busy preparing for the Spring/Summer 2013 season. Known for her romantic Parisian style, Hofman has looked to her fascination with ballerinas as the main theme to her collections. The women of Paris have always seemed to show very little effort and yet, they can walk down the street turning heads from all over. That is what Jessica Hofman is all about. Showing her pieces all over Montreal, including the oh-so-popular Mimi and Coco boutiques, Hofman is ready to take the rest of Canada by storm.

Mijana: You just recently went to Paris for some more inspiration. What caught your attention?
Jessica: People in Paris are definitely not afraid to show off anymore! I saw amazing jewelry pieces that included feathers and multi-colour beads with many rows of chains. This season, it is all about maximizing the pieces and mixing them but always with classy touch! That is what I like the most. It is never too much. That is what I wish to bring to my pieces.

M: Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! Are you adding a certain extra touch to your collection?
J: I definitely want to use mother of pearl heart shapes beads that I have kept in stock for Valentine’s Day. Freshwater pearls are also a favourite of mine to use. Bracelets have been very popular with my clients. I’ve tried to make them look trendy yet very romantic.

M: What’s in store for Jessica Hofman in 2013?
J: I am launching my website soon, www.jessicahofman.com, and will be developing an e-shop so I can also sell my pieces online. I still want to add more French touches to my collection including more charms such as ice cream, tea cup and chocolate bar charms – something that I saw all over Paris! I have my sights on doing more trunk shows all over Montreal and Toronto. This will allow me to be more interactive with new customers. My ultimate goal is to find a location in Paris and sell my collections there.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: For the Co-Worker

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Every year I get tons of creative, cost effective ideas for everyone on my list, and go into the holiday season with a frugal gung-ho attitude. Then reality and panic slowly start to sink in as I realize I have absolutely no time to be baking dozens of gingerbread men or making bath balms for everyone on my list. Shopping for a close friend can sometimes be hard enough, let alone a friend you barely speak to outside of your 9-5 setting. You see your co-workers on a daily basis, but when it comes to shopping for them, you quickly realize you have no idea what their interests are. Instead of putting a hefty dent into your bank account, consider these festive gift ideas for your workplace gift exchange.

2. Forever 21 Striped PJ Set, $19
3. Victoria’s Secret Gloss and Go Key Chain, $23
4. Ted Baker Flying Duck Friendship Bracelet, $19

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: Mom’s the Word

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

It’s always a joy at this time of the year to give to those in need and the ones we love the most. Nonetheless, as I get older, I find myself caring a little less each year about the endless materialistic side associated to the holiday and more about doing something good through volunteering or donating to a charity on behalf of my niece and nephew to teach them the value of giving back. This year my mom and I decided to forgo gift giving to one another and donate our time nearby instead to the charity Ancient Order of Doers Anonymous. There are several other charities in need out there for you to choose from if you feel inclined to help out those in need of a warm meal or a child who would love a teddy bear to snuggle up with at night, but in the meantime if you are feeling extra generous and have a little more to give this year, who better to spoil, on top of all your generous volunteering, than the mother you love most with some treats of her own!

You don’t have to spend a fortune, because let’s face it, your time is the most precious gift you can give to your loved ones, but I’ve rounded up my top 10 places to find those splendid splurges for Mom this Christmas! From jewelry with a special meaning to iconic fashion history, you’ll be checking off that list in no time and come out on top with good Karma for all your added do-good-giving in the New Year!
