New Kids On The Block – Erg, Runway
Canadian Designers To Watch This Season at WMCFW

There’s nothing like that giddy feeling before World MasterCard Fashion Week officially kicks off in the heart of Toronto. With it comes promise for the warmer weather and fresh designs to revive our fashion palettes. The schedule was recently launched and the lineup looks promising. We can count on Chloe Comme Parris, Pink Tartan, Joe Fresh, Vawk, and Lucian Matis for a theatrical and breathtaking show, but who are the new kids in town this season? Who are the faces to keep a close eye on, and how did they get their big break at World MasterCard Fashion Week?

Christopher Bates
Christopher was first introduced to us when he was selected as the only menswear designer to compete in the Mercedes Benz Start-Up Competition during fashion week for spring 2013. After his debut, it was reported in an after show interview that Jeanne Beker said, “I have no doubt at all that that guy is going to make it.” Christopher is busy selling his menswear at Toronto’s menswear store, Gotstyle, and has since been names one of the top six leading menswear designers in Canada. With climbing exposure and an elite ranking, Christopher is a homegrown star on the rise. You won’t want to miss his show Wednesday, March 20 @ 4:00pm in the studio.

Caitlin Power
Caitlin was also a Mercedes Benz Start-Up Show contestant for spring 2013. Since moving to Toronto from Calgary, Power sparked a name for herself in the cities fashion scene rapidly. She is gaining coverage in some of Canada’s top fashion magazine, such as Flare, Elle, and Fashion, and now is the star of her own show during this upcoming fashion week. Power is known for her signature style of tailoring with an edge. She focuses on the traditional female form, and mixes textures and shapes to redefine femininity with masculine touches. See her at the tents on Friday, March 22 @ 6:00pm in the studio.

DUY
Duy Nguyen was the Mercedes Benz Start-Up winner and awarded designer, after speechless panel fell in love for his sharp cuts, and mastery of defining an exaggerated edge. After studying fashion at LaSalle College, Duy generated a name for himself after one season, debuting his high end and ready-to-wear lines, and continues to showcase this mastered design style. “Great style happens when it really reflects who you are.” See what DUY has to offer us this season on Tuesday, March 19 @ 7:00pm.

Matthew Gallagher
Matthew is a young Canadian designer who studied and is now based in Milan. Matthew demonstrated a love for fashion and design growing up, pursuing his passions by reaching out to Tom Ford and interning in New York. His design style is modern European elegance with a Western touch. Watch him return home on Thursday, March 21 @ 4:00pm in the studio.

Thomas Bálint
With a Hungarian heritage, Thomas knows what it means to design authentic and innovative. Studying sculpture at the Ontario College of Art and Design here in Toronto, Thomas adopted a heavily modernized style and a love for all design outlets. What keeps him inspired is constantly exploring new devices, and his creations are often reflections of the past. Thomas Bálint debuts on Friday, March 22 at 5:00pm.

Fashion Jobs – Caitlin Power Interview

Monday, December 10th, 2012

Calgary native, Caitlin Power has been recognized for redefining women’s wear through classic tailoring, architectural details and sharp silhouettes. As a graduate from the Fashion Design Program at Lethbridge College, Power established her self-titled contemporary line in 2008. Since then, she has featured her collection at Western Canada Fashion Week and Toronto Fashion Week. Her work has been shown in Elle, Flare and FASHION and who wouldn’t want to talk about this edgy designer whose trade mark material has been, my personal favourite, LEATHER! After just finishing up the final touches for her Spring/Summer collection, Caitlin sat down with me to talk about everything – well – Caitlin Power!

Mijana: The Caitlin Power line is known for its architectural influences. What were your first influences when you started designing?
Caitlin: I’ve always been inspired by architecture, but when I started design, it was mainly men’s tailoring.
The SS13 collection was inspired by light.  How it reacts with different objects, absorbed by some and reflected by others.  There’s also certain power that comes from light, and finding a perfect balance between light and dark.

The FW13 collection that I’m working on now is inspired by my recent trip to London and Paris.  One building in particular caught my eye, The Louvre and the Pyramid.  I was drawn to the mix of ancient and modern architecture acting as one.

M: You just finished up Toronto’s World Mastercard Fashion Week in October – what do you enjoy most of doing fashion shows?
C: I love the feeling of accomplishment after a big show like World Mastercard Fashion Week.  To know all the handwork has paid off and to showcase my designs to a variety of people.

M: Calgary was your home up until last year when you moved to Toronto, what’s your take on Toronto compared to Calgary?
C: Toronto is a much larger and older city than Calgary.  Calgary has new money and is constantly growing.  Both cities have their differences and I love them both for their inspiration, “home away from home” feel and for my family, friends and supporters in both.

M: The winter season is all about layering and staying warm. It’s nice to have some edge in one’s wardrobe. What pieces from the Fall/Winter ’12 collection would you recommend for the contemporary young woman?
C: The perfect Fall/Winter look from the CAITLIN POWER collection would be the Grey and Black Wool Jacket, Black Panelled Sheer Blouse, and our Black Skinny Pants.

M: What future goals do you have for the Caitlin Power collection?
C: We’re targeting our consumer by hosting a Flash-Sale with Jewellery Designer, Ana Bogdanovic from M.W.L.  The sale is on Saturday December 15th from 11-7pm at 639 Queen St. West (Burroughs Building).  After this we plan to do a trade show in NYC to reach the United States market, and continue to show in Canada.

Edmonton Fashion Jobs – Toronto Fashion Week: The Ones to Watch

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

It’s always fun to see the latest collections from some of Canada’s most well-known designers, but LGFW is also about supporting new local talent. Here are three emerging designers that showed last week at David Pecaut Square that we think will become an important part of Canada’s style scene.

Caitlin Power
Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Caitlin Power has caught the attention of Avenue magazine,
Toronto Fashion Incubator, and the White Cashmere Collection. With an aesthetic inspired by androgyny and architecture, her Spring/Summer 2012 show at LGFW featured sultry cut-outs and angular shapes that demand attention.
Cassie Dee
This patternmaker and instruction turned designer launched her own line in 2010. Her show was part of the Mercedes Benz start up show, meant to showcase emerging talent, and was a cohesive line of western-inspired pieces accented by burnt orange prints.

Anu Raina

This is Anu Raina’s second show at LGFW after a successful debut in April, and she has been featured in the Globe and Mail and CBC Radio as a promising entrepreneur. Raina’s unique textiles and flair with colourful prints make her sweet, simple designs stand out.
