Fashion Jobs – Weekend Away: Country Vs. City

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

I’m always inspired by Joe Zee’s posts for ELLE – he has an intuitive and witty approach to styling various occasions’ different ways. His outfits cover everything from baseball games, to first interviews or mom time, which got me thinking about how to style various activities for Summer. In the coming months, long weekends compose many of our mini escapes, and whether a weekend away means jetting to New York, Toronto, or Seattle, or hitting your country cottage or cabin, you will inevitably want to compose a look that meets the needs of your chosen locale. I’ve dreamed up two juxtaposing ensembles for two disparate trips – one for the sightseeing city vacation, and the other for country living. See my picks for each respective jaunt to ensure you are one happy camper, or happy city dweller.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – East Coast Style

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

In response to last week’s post on west coast style, I’ve scoured the racks to find pieces that fit the aesthetic of the east coast girl. While west coasters thrive on undone glamour, our eastern counterparts are heavy on crisp classics. Looks are slightly more tailored, and put together – take a cue from style maven Olivia Palermo who never seems to get it wrong (don’t miss her video for the Outnet here.) While she exudes easy style, not unlike California girls Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth, she focuses on timeless essentials like Breton striped blouses, tailored trenches, A-line skirts and stiletto pumps. Easterners always seem to have a more cosmopolitan air about them compared to west coast girls, a more structured look, and it shows head-to-toe.

1. Anthropologie Piped Peplum Blouse, $88
2. Club Monaco Alice Double-Knit Dress, $150
3. Zara Blazer with Box Shoulder, $159
4. Club Monaco Striped Cotton Shell, $40
5. Michael Kors Oversized Watch, $294, available at Shopbop
6. J. Crew Tartine Purse, $180
7. Babaton Alvin Shorts, $110, Aritzia
8. Zara Leather Court Shoe, $100

Fashion Jobs – West Coast Style

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Us west coasters have a laid back persona and it reflects in our style. Given the mild, yet tempestuous climate of the Pacific Northwest – the sun is out one minute, and it’s raining the next – layering is key. We generally combine function and form for durability (you never know where you’ll end up outdoors!), so looks tend to be versatile and casual – a kind of undone glamour that’s less structured than our eastern counterparts. Think a mild twist on the California girl: Lauren Conrad, Kate Bosworth, Rumi Neely, or Diane Kruger. Staple fabrics include breezy silks, distressed denim, and soft jersey knits for relaxed silhouettes; leather jackets toughen up floral frocks, and silk blouses dress up denim cutoffs. Outfits work overtime to take you from a bike ride on the seawall, to brunch with your grandmother, to dinner and drinks on a first date. See my essentials that capture the bohemian spirit of the west coast woman.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – St. Paddy’s Day

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

St. Patrick’s Day is always a fun occasion to celebrate and luckily this year will be very easy to coordinate outfits because the pantone colour of the season is Emerald Green. Neon colours are huge this season, but I’m excited to see this shade outshining others, because year after year colours, such as pink, blue and yellow, take the limelight. With that said, this weekend is a perfect opportunity to shop and focus on this beautiful shade to try on and stand out from the ‘default’ colours everyone else is wearing! I think it’s no ‘luck’ the Irish are so stylish; fashion is being individual and standing out from the crowd with confidence, beautiful colours that often get overlooked is a perfect palette to do just that. St. Paddy’s day will be a fun day/night as usual, but when you’re holding your green beer this year, hold it in style!

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Inspired by Prada Fall 2013

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Miuccia Prada’s womenswear collection for Autumn Winter 2013 captured the designer’s vision of “raw elegance” through disheveled glamour. Models strutted down the runways, hair unkempt and lips rouged, to a Hitchcock Heroine film noir music motif. The look juxtaposes high and low elements, where vintage silk slips pair effortlessly under tailored coats and luxe furs. Waistlines are nipped and shoulders exposed, riffing on Fourties’ style silhouettes. To channel Miuccia’s vision, pair plush pieces like Club Monaco’s faux fur vest over a simple black dress, or a rich leather skirt under a cable knit cardigan. Metallic embellishments add an edgy finishing touch here, transcending these ensembles between late night and early morning. As always, this Prada girl is modern, mysterious and perfectly undone.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – What to Pack for a Tropical Trip

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

With March around the corner, Spring Break is in the air and many of us are packing our bags for a holiday in the sun. Packing can cause quite the conundrum (for me, it’s narrowing down shoes), but to beat the heat, the old adage ‘less is more’ applies. The key is versatility: your items have to work double time to take you from the beach to cocktail hour. I’ve narrowed it down to twelve holiday essentials to make packing a breeze:

A dress that will take you from day to night: As an LA based label, PJK makes great pieces for the sun, and this dress is no exception. Part of the exclusive collaboration with the Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, this cream frock is a poly silk blend to flatter your figure and maintain your cool.

Sunglasses: A great pair of shades are a must-have for anyone (fashion oriented, or not) and Karen Walker’s shades are as glam as you can go. A favourite of Atlantic-Pacific’s Blair Eadie, these gems take basic beach attire to the next level.

Beach Cover Up: Tunics are an essential piece to pack. They can stand-alone and still look good.

A Floppy Hat: SPF is only one way to protect your skin from the sun, so a wide brimmed hat is both functional and fashionable.

A Good Beach Tote: Club Monaco’s preppy resort collection offered a plethora of great items this season, and the balance of Breton stripes and paisley print on this tote, is equal parts bohemian and nautical.

A lightweight blouse: Finding a versatile shirt that works in humid climates is hard to come by. This piece by Zara will match with shorts or high-waisted skirts, and pair well under a denim jacket.

A cozy wrap: Even hot climates can get chilly, but this Community Ionic Cape has got you covered for chilly evenings and air-conditioned plane rides.

Denim Jacket: Jackets can take up a lot of room in your suitcase; so if you need to narrow it down, choose a cropped denim piece. They pair well over dresses or shorts for sightseeing or evening cocktails.

A printed scarf: Accessories are easy ways to transform your outfit (especially if you are re-wearing the same pieces).

A Bikini: Presumably, you won’t narrow it down to just one, but if you do, opt for a strapless piece to save you from bad tan lines. This season, ruffles are big, and coming in around $100, this suit tops the trend at a reasonable price.

A pair of cuffed shorts: While cutoffs are an easy piece to pack, opt for durability when packing shorts. The Dillon style from T. Babaton will take you to the city, the beach or the bar.

A pair of wedges or espadrilles: Essential to take you to cocktail hour. Wedges are easy and they match well with almost everything, plus they offer comfort too.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Holographic Elements

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Transitional dressing between seasons can be dismal, especially post-holidays, so I was delighted when I came across See by Chloé’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection for mid-season fashion inspiration. In its third season, the contemporary womenswear label featured a more effervescent approach to its usual bohemian aesthete, through the use of metallic sheen. The result? A collection that felt simultaneously retro and modern, where quilted metallic bomber jackets and silver ankle boots stand up against sixties inspired maxi dresses, slouchy pant-suits and silk chiffon frocks.

Paris’ diffusion label wasn’t the only brand to recently showcase metallic. Holographic hues and iridescent embellishments showed up on various resort shows, and most notably, Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 13 RTW collection. To invoke instant insouciant cool-girl chic a la Stella and Chloé, opt for small pops of sparkle, and the trend will speak for itself.

3. Zara Printed Velvet Kimono, $139
4. Free People Galaxy Oxfords, $189
