Fashion Jobs – 20’s Cinematic Style: The Great Gatsby

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Flapper girls adorned in embellished gowns to the nines, alongside rich vintage accessories, gallivanting with ease over some popped bubbly. Envision yourself amongst the party crowd, as the eye of the man of the hour himself, Gatsby. This coming Friday, May 10, it’s time to hold your own elaborate affair behind the screen, and join the talents of Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton as they recreate the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gastby. The compelling tale unveils both love and tragedy, luring us to time travel back to wealth in the 20’s. Just when you thought your star gazed eyes couldn’t get any wider…it’s in 3D.

Costume designer, Catherine Martin, selected 40 stunning vintage Miu Miu and Prada cocktail designs from the time, which are on exhibition to the public at Prada flagship stores in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai until mid-July. Jewelry and headpieces were custom designed by the one company who best represents the films royal ora best, Tiffany & Co.

Here’s how to play a more formal version of dress up, to wear to a movie night out with your girlfriends, or a media screening party. Top one of them off with an elegant headpiece and Mary Jane pumps, and they’ll be more eyes on you than Leonardo (if that’s at all possible).

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Lucite

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

Lucite, a clear plastic material, has been seen walking its way up into even the top designers runway shows, ranking it one of the biggest trends for 2013. From clutches and platforms, to bangles and belts, lucite is being used on and throughout just about every accent piece you could think of! It’s minimalistic and elegant, contributing a sense of glamour and class to even the most understated look. The transparency is enduring, without baring it all. If you’re not comfortable flaunting a solely lucite piece, exposing more than a glimpse of your rather personal side, opt for pieces with more subdued see-through shapes or accents. The classic black pump with a lucite heel is the perfect combination of femininity and edge, or a lucite boot worn with frilled ankle socks would be sassy and sweet. Regardless of whether you venture out of your comfort zone or not, this trend brings the freshness of spring offering a versatile lightness.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Spring Trend: Neon

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Don’t be afraid to embrace the eclectic in you! Even the most conservative can find a way to merge classic and daring trends. This season has steered away from pastel in favour of more fluorescent pieces to accentuate our closets. I truly feel that neon can mix with every type of fashion personality but one stylish tip for those who like to play it safe – combine bright tops with simple, neutral coloured bottoms. A pair of skinny jeans will flash out in an instant! Head turning fashionistas may be lured into the great selection of pant suits covering hot pink, green and yellow. Of course, accessories will always be our number one go-to-look for a trend like this one. You will truly brighten up anyone’s day.

1. Zara Neon Box Clutch, $40
2. J.Crew Neon Lace Pumps, $346
3. Forever 21 Neon Skinny Jeans, $29

Fashion Jobs – Labels to Love: Lloyd and Wolf Couture

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

DSquared, Obakki, David Dixon, Pink Tartan, Matt & Nat – Canadian designers are indisputably taking the fashion world by storm, marking our home and native land a key player when it comes to cutting edge style. There’s nothing more delightful to a fashionista of the True North than the discovery of new and upcoming Canadiana brands following suit, which is why handbag couture house Lloyd and Wolf is a label to love!

Based in Vancouver, Lloyd & Wolf is a uniquely limited-run, couture-oriented brand of handcrafted leather accessories designed to reflect the fierce individuality of its coveters. An array of luxe, textured Spanish and Italian leathers and skins, rich colours, adorned with the brand’s signature spiked hardware creates a unique collection of must-have bags to tote.

In a mass-driven world, there’s nothing more treasured than a couture ‘pièce de résistance’, which is why Lloyd and Wolf’s philosophy of hand-numbered creations holds true. Focusing on intricate workmanship, combining classic style with rock n’ roll edge and luxurious quality sets the brand apart from the rest. Fiercely individual, it’s how Lloyd and Wolf rolls!
Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee, in lush leather embellished with a dose of heavy metal. Lloyd and Wolf, we wear you proudly.

The Abi tote is a no-nonsense must-have and my personal fave! Excellent for storage, featuring zip and slide pockets for easy portability – hello, airport security – it’s a traveller’s dream bag.

Oh Chrissy, you’re so fine in an array of black croc leather, calfskin and hair-on calf. A classic shape with edgy detail, including several pockets to stash purse essentials makes this structured shoulder bag a versatile day or evening tote.

Good things come in small packages, but that doesn’t make the Maddy bag any less fierce! A detachable strap and hidden straps converts this piece easily from a cross body to a shorter shoulder bag, to a clutch. Oh, how we love style chameleons!

The one that started it all, Phoebe’s soft hobo shape is a day bag to sport. Function and fashion unite to create this popular piece, with signature spike hardware to add that extra edge, whatever your errand.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: For the Co-Worker

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Every year I get tons of creative, cost effective ideas for everyone on my list, and go into the holiday season with a frugal gung-ho attitude. Then reality and panic slowly start to sink in as I realize I have absolutely no time to be baking dozens of gingerbread men or making bath balms for everyone on my list. Shopping for a close friend can sometimes be hard enough, let alone a friend you barely speak to outside of your 9-5 setting. You see your co-workers on a daily basis, but when it comes to shopping for them, you quickly realize you have no idea what their interests are. Instead of putting a hefty dent into your bank account, consider these festive gift ideas for your workplace gift exchange.

4. Ted Baker Flying Duck Friendship Bracelet, $19

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – With Love, from Russia

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Over the Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks, the Russian fashion elite, deemed by the New York Times as the ‘Russian Fashion Pack’, dominated street-style blogs due to their opulent ensembles and zany choices – think wild prints, brocade, fur, jewels, hair accessories and killer shoes. The look has already transpired well into fall, see our post on baroque, but hot on the heels of the holiday season’s epic blockbuster, Anna Karenina, the Russian-inspired aesthete has blown-up. If this highly anticipated cinematic adaptation, which spawned it’s own capsule collection at Banana Republic, turns out anything close to last year’s obsession with Lisbeth Salander, this look is here to stay.

The Tolstoy classic has been reimagined, chock full of dreamy designer pieces from vintage Dior to Chanel. It also marks the acting debut for model of the moment and Karl Lagerfeld muse, Cara Delevigne, featured above in Chanel’s resort campaign. I love Karl’s dreamy take on the look, his pastel hued version of the Chanel tweed jacket, mixed with silk and feathers is to die for. I love the modern whimsical take on the troubled ingénue.
