Calgary Fashion Jobs – Spring Accessories Trends

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Accessories are an integral part to any ensemble and can often elevate even the most basic outfits to a new level. This spring, the trends are bold and full of colour, making it even more crucial to pick the right pieces.

A statement necklace or stack of geometric bangles can really add to the composition of an outfit. This season, designers are opting for chain link, chunky jewellery in classic gold and silver. One standout item is oversized earrings, a vaguely bohemian item that can really frame a face and add a lot of immediate interest. The Coat of Arms necklace by Canadian jewellery duo Blackbird is a great example of the chunky trend, with chain link detailing and feminine braiding contrasting.

Boxy totes were an accessories staple on the runway this season, with Dolce & Gabana, Celine and Chloe all featuring some variation of the trend. While the totes remained relatively subdued and classic, other designers like Fendi, Diane von Furstenberg and Chanel did fun takes on another classic handbag shape – the clutch. Bright colours and almost childlike detailing make this accessory a bold statement for Spring.

For footwear, wedges and stacked heels continued to be a big trend this year. Dolce & Gabana presented an intricate, colourful wedge while Pucci’s version of a wedge was uber feminine with a slightly “Under the Sea” appeal. Heeled gladiator sandals also made a re-appearance, this time with a slightly less bohemian, more futuristic edge like the pair seen at Alexander Wang’s show.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – St. Paddy’s Day

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

St. Patrick’s Day is always a fun occasion to celebrate and luckily this year will be very easy to coordinate outfits because the pantone colour of the season is Emerald Green. Neon colours are huge this season, but I’m excited to see this shade outshining others, because year after year colours, such as pink, blue and yellow, take the limelight. With that said, this weekend is a perfect opportunity to shop and focus on this beautiful shade to try on and stand out from the ‘default’ colours everyone else is wearing! I think it’s no ‘luck’ the Irish are so stylish; fashion is being individual and standing out from the crowd with confidence, beautiful colours that often get overlooked is a perfect palette to do just that. St. Paddy’s day will be a fun day/night as usual, but when you’re holding your green beer this year, hold it in style!

Fashion Jobs – Jewellery a la Français!

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Combining both her French and Canadian inspirations together, Montreal based designer, Jessica Hofman, has been very busy preparing for the Spring/Summer 2013 season. Known for her romantic Parisian style, Hofman has looked to her fascination with ballerinas as the main theme to her collections. The women of Paris have always seemed to show very little effort and yet, they can walk down the street turning heads from all over. That is what Jessica Hofman is all about. Showing her pieces all over Montreal, including the oh-so-popular Mimi and Coco boutiques, Hofman is ready to take the rest of Canada by storm.

Mijana: You just recently went to Paris for some more inspiration. What caught your attention?
Jessica: People in Paris are definitely not afraid to show off anymore! I saw amazing jewelry pieces that included feathers and multi-colour beads with many rows of chains. This season, it is all about maximizing the pieces and mixing them but always with classy touch! That is what I like the most. It is never too much. That is what I wish to bring to my pieces.

M: Valentine’s Day is coming up soon! Are you adding a certain extra touch to your collection?
J: I definitely want to use mother of pearl heart shapes beads that I have kept in stock for Valentine’s Day. Freshwater pearls are also a favourite of mine to use. Bracelets have been very popular with my clients. I’ve tried to make them look trendy yet very romantic.

M: What’s in store for Jessica Hofman in 2013?
J: I am launching my website soon, www.jessicahofman.com, and will be developing an e-shop so I can also sell my pieces online. I still want to add more French touches to my collection including more charms such as ice cream, tea cup and chocolate bar charms – something that I saw all over Paris! I have my sights on doing more trunk shows all over Montreal and Toronto. This will allow me to be more interactive with new customers. My ultimate goal is to find a location in Paris and sell my collections there.

Fashion Jobs – The Black Box Boutique

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

When you walk into the The Black Box Boutique you really do feel like you`re walking into a little jewellery box! Having opened just four months ago, bloggers and fashionistas from all over the city have been drooling over the hand selected brands by owner, Lilla Balint, such as ToyWatch, Vita Fede, Noir and also Canadian brands such as Liel and Lentz and her own in-house exclusive line, LB. Recognized for her distinctive selections, these lines have been crafted in places as far-flung as Israel, India, France and more! Just this past October, pieces from The BBB were shown off during World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto by writers for Stylicity on behalf of fashion week.

This 2nd floor walk-up in Yorkville offers a great range in prices starting at $40 upwards to $500.  There is something in here for everyone, which is what Balint has tried to achieve. “I wanted to have pieces of all different styles because I want every kind of woman to come in here,” said Balint. Also, the boutique carries lines for men including Charles P. Bahringer known for his pure stainless steel modern rings, earrings and necklaces.  A personal favourite of mine, I also love coming into the store on Saturdays when Lilla has her famous ‘Mimosa Saturdays’ where she serves the best mixes to refresh while shopping around.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2013!

This week The Black Box Boutique will be holding some amazing Boxing Day sales on Dec 26th and is located at 106 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto. For more information please visit www.theblackboxboutique.com or follow @theblackboxbout on Twitter.

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: Mom’s the Word

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

It’s always a joy at this time of the year to give to those in need and the ones we love the most. Nonetheless, as I get older, I find myself caring a little less each year about the endless materialistic side associated to the holiday and more about doing something good through volunteering or donating to a charity on behalf of my niece and nephew to teach them the value of giving back. This year my mom and I decided to forgo gift giving to one another and donate our time nearby instead to the charity Ancient Order of Doers Anonymous. There are several other charities in need out there for you to choose from if you feel inclined to help out those in need of a warm meal or a child who would love a teddy bear to snuggle up with at night, but in the meantime if you are feeling extra generous and have a little more to give this year, who better to spoil, on top of all your generous volunteering, than the mother you love most with some treats of her own!

You don’t have to spend a fortune, because let’s face it, your time is the most precious gift you can give to your loved ones, but I’ve rounded up my top 10 places to find those splendid splurges for Mom this Christmas! Vancouver Fashion Jobs – The Blue Box

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

As Audrey understood, some things, like breakfast, or life in general, are really just so much better with a little blue Tiffany’s box in the mix. She was right, of course, as Audrey often was when it came to fashion and beauty, and that perfectly wrapped box continues to represent the same timeless elegance and sophistication it did as she sipped her morning latte all those years ago. Fast forward and women everywhere still covet the blue box brand and nowadays, specifically their collection of attainable luxury, made famous by the traditional Tiffany’s sterling silver heart. The ideal blend of wearable, everyday pieces at price points that allow for a splurge on a new bracelet, earrings or a necklace, this silver collection has branched off to include designer collaborations, trend pieces and so much more – think “where-did-you-get-that” unexpected designs to round out your accessory collection and have you channeling Ms. Hepburn season after season. You should still make room in the safe for a diamond tiara, but in the meantime, here are our favorite silver pieces for Fall 2012.

1. Tiffany Elsa Peretti Mesh Bracelet, $1,250
2. Tiffany Paloma’s Marrakesh Earrings, $745
3. Tiffany Twist Ring, $165
4. Tiffany 1837 Interlocking Circles Pendant, $1,400

Calgary Fashion Jobs – If It’s Not Baroque…

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Revive the renaissance era this season with brocade motifs, sumptuous fabrics, rich tapestries, and ornate embellishments for fall’s most dramatic and prominent trend that has designers and fashionistas alike going for baroque. Elaborate trimmings and gilded accents add to the opulence and lavishness of this beautiful baroque period trend that will have you donning 17th century inspired duds with old world flair. Elevate this European charm with palatial adornments like gleaming jewels, ornamented filigrees and embossed prints for ultimate decadence a la Dolce & Gabbana. Luxe metallics offer a royal high polish shine to everyday looks if you’re not up to this over the top and excessive trend. To achieve a style status that is of grandeur quality, don intricate beaded pieces and opulent embroidery with plush velvets or silk satins for a copious contrast. For a modern twist on this old world look pair extravagant trimmings with lustrous leather for a sleek and sexy contemporary look. Step aside minimalism, fall’s beautiful baroque is reigning supreme this season.
