Calgary Fashion Jobs – Summer Lace

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

Lace traditionally embodies an overtly feminine aesthetic, but recently the fabric has become much more wearable, casual, and even edgy. For summer, it has showed up on everything from maxi-dresses, to crop tops and shorts, amplified by modern accents like scalloped edges or laser cutouts. No longer reserved for girlish glamour, the trend now takes on a more subversive vibe. Take a cue from Kate Bosworth, who rocked a head-to-toe white lace look at this season’s Coachella festivities. Minimally accessorized with ankle boots and aviators, the style muse looks equal parts boho and nouveau. Shop my favourite summer ready pieces below.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Share Some Sunshine

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Yellow is a standout shade that instantly draws the eye, so it can be a bit tricky to work into your wardrobe. Pale yellow is infinitely wearable, while bright, richly pigmented yellows are a bolder choice. Because it’s such a noticeable colour, you must choose the other shades of your outfit with care. Black on yellow immediately screams bumblebee or taxicab, but white and denim perfectly offset yellow’s bright nature. Choose a standout piece like a shirt or sundress, or add a small pop of colour with yellow accessories. Either way, you’re sure to shine under the sun.

Fashion Jobs – Crazy for Nella Bella

Friday, May 17th, 2013

A few months back, I had the pleasure of attending a fabulous Fall/Winter 2013 preview by Nella Bella’s creative director Tarek Al-Azbat. Nella Bella was established by Tarek as a handbag line made entirely of vegan fabrics. Eco friendly fashion is on the rise and having seen how amazing these bags were, I couldn’t help myself and thought this was something that must be shared with all of our StyleNineToFive readers.

Not only was I taken aback by the great fabrics, Tarek is also a Canadian designer, a veteran within the community, who has uniquely crafted his handbags for every kind of fashionista. His products (both handbags and accessories) are light-weight, modern, have eye-catching lining, and, best of all, are environmentally friendly. For Fall Winter 2013, you’ll see everything from neutrals to metallics. Once again, there is something for every gal out there. The best part? All bags are under $200!

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Office Space Sandals

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

May sunshine is here, so stop covering up your gorgeous pedicure with socks and closed-toe shoes. Even if you have an office-based 9-to-5 gig, there are lots of work-appropriate sandals that will show off your perfectly polished toes. Most business-casual workplaces frown upon flip-flops and athletic sandals, but a sophisticated pair of sandals with a little more foot coverage maintains the look of a consummate professional and lets your feet breathe. Incorporate these work-ready sandals into your wardrobe for a touch of summery style that will make Monday mornings a little more palatable.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Biker Gang

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

Recently, leather has taken over the runway and the streets. As Fashion Week gave us a peak into the hottest Fall/Winter trends of 2013, we saw leather all over the place. Fashion lovers could not wait to get their hands on some trendy leather jackets, so this spring, expect to see a lot of it. Whether it be tough black with a sundress, fresh white, or a pop of a bright colour, leather jackets are all the rage this season. Try drawing inspiration from Anna Sui, or Los Angles designer duo, Rodarte. Both Spring 2013 lines featured a punky punch of leather incorporated into a usually soft palate. This season channel your inner biker and strap on the leather.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Summer Sunnies

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

For the most part, we tend to accessorize a little more simply during the summer season. This is in part due to the heat, and the lack of need for layering. Knowing this, choosing the right accessories for your summer outfit are even more important. The perfect pair of sunglasses has the opportunity to really elevate and pull together a summer look. Trends for summer eyewear tend to be diverse, but choosing something that compliments your face shape is a crucial aspect to selecting your ideal pair.

For round faces, choose angular sunglasses. A great option is the classic Wayfarer frame from Ray Ban. Alternatively, if you have a square shaped face, be sure to go with round sunnies. This year, round sunglasses a la Lennon are making a big comeback, so go ahead and indulge your inner hippie.

Long faces work best with oversized sunglasses, as they work well to balance out the proportions on a long face. If you have an oval face shape, any style of sunglasses will work on you. Since this face shape allows you to be a bit more daring, check out Tom Ford’s famous Nikita sunglasses. These sunglasses are super chic, and can be work with a casual outfit for instant cool girl appeal. Finally, if you have a heart shape face, try a cool pair of aviators. The round edges will help draw the focus downward on the face. Whichever pair of sunnies you choose this summer keep these simple tips in mind to elevate your favourite summer outfit!

2Free People Goodnight Moon sunglasses, $18
3. Chloe Caspia 58mm sunglasses, available at Nordstrom, $311

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Majed by Alexa

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

I love French label Maje for its dedication to relaxed cool-girl chic.  With Alexa Chung as their brand ambassador, the contemporary women’s wear line exudes trendy nonchalance aligned with the likes of Vanessa Bruno, Sandro, and Isabel Marant Etoile.  For spring, Brit It-Girl Chung took on a styling role with the label, entitled ‘Majed by Alexa.’  The collaboration presented a contest where three lucky winners were outfitted by the icon and featured on the site, and Maje also created a pop-up shop boasting Chung’s style picks.  The three-time BFA British Style Icon winner was a natural fit for the label – her affinity to tomboy tailoring, offset by girl-next-door innocence strikes an easy balance between English maverick and English rose – think leather lace up boots, cuffed trousers and boyfriend blazers paired with soft feminine pieces like lace shorts, or silk blouses to create a bohemian rocker aesthetic.  Review my picks that will help you achieve this French meets English love affair look.

1Embroidered Lace Top, $340 USD

2Leather Sandals, $480 USD
3Open Back Lace Blouse, $235 USD
4Cuffed Trousers, $285 USD
5Black Mini Shorts, $235 USD
6Combo High-Low Dress, $425 USD

Maje is available at The Bay

Make sure to bring a rain coat just in case the unspeakable happens so you can still have a good time. Say hi to mother nature for me!

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Swimsuit Season

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The increasingly lovely weather in the past few weeks across the country has signalled summer’s imminent arrival. Summer typically fashion has a laid back feel; flowy maxi dresses, denim cut-offs, oversized tees. One important part of summer fashion that is sometimes overlooked is finding the right swimsuit and related accessories. Swimwear often reflects trends that we see on the runway, and in recent years, more brands and large retailers are offering their own versions of beach wear.

This year, the trends in swimwear are continuing the “bolder is better” motto from the last few years. Cut-outs were a big trend on the runway for Spring/Summer ’13, working their way into oversized tees, and dresses. The itty bitty Eagle Shadow Bikini from Australian brand One Teaspoon is an example of this trend carrying over to swimwear.
Graphic prints and bold, colourful patterns are also quickly becoming a prominent trend in beach wear this season. Wildfox offers many different variations of this style, with one pieces featuring everything from graphic animal prints to the Union Jack.

For beach goers looking for something more feminine, check out the bohemian inspired crochet one pieces from Lisa Maree. These ornate, lacey bathing suits are not what you typically think of when you think swimwear, and are definite standout pieces.

A great cover-up and beach towel are as important as the swimsuit itself. For a real taste of California beach lifestyle, check out Jen’s Pirate Booty. Her beautiful, ethereal garments can function both for a day at the beach and also as a dress for drinks afterwards. For an out of the ordinary beach towel, Lauren Moshi`s illustrated hippie-girl towel is a great option.

1. One Teaspoon Eagle Shadow Bikini, $129
2. Wildfox French Flowers Kitty Lovelock Ruffle One Piece, $188
3. Lisa Maree Crochet Monokini, available at Free People, $151
4. Jen’s Pirate Booty Beach Bum Kaftan, $132
5. Lauren Moshi Beach Towel, available at Bloomingdales, $57
