Fashion Jobs – 20’s Cinematic Style: The Great Gatsby

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Flapper girls adorned in embellished gowns to the nines, alongside rich vintage accessories, gallivanting with ease over some popped bubbly. Envision yourself amongst the party crowd, as the eye of the man of the hour himself, Gatsby. This coming Friday, May 10, it’s time to hold your own elaborate affair behind the screen, and join the talents of Leonardo Dicaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton as they recreate the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gastby. The compelling tale unveils both love and tragedy, luring us to time travel back to wealth in the 20’s. Just when you thought your star gazed eyes couldn’t get any wider…it’s in 3D.

Costume designer, Catherine Martin, selected 40 stunning vintage Miu Miu and Prada cocktail designs from the time, which are on exhibition to the public at Prada flagship stores in New York, Tokyo and Shanghai until mid-July. Jewelry and headpieces were custom designed by the one company who best represents the films royal ora best, Tiffany & Co.

Here’s how to play a more formal version of dress up, to wear to a movie night out with your girlfriends, or a media screening party. Top one of them off with an elegant headpiece and Mary Jane pumps, and they’ll be more eyes on you than Leonardo (if that’s at all possible).

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Channeling the NeverEnding Story

Monday, November 12th, 2012

(Photo: The NeverEnding Story)

I recall as a youngin’ being absolutely mesmerized by the Princess of Fantasia in the cult classic film, The NeverEnding Story. Well thankfully for me, and of course you, you lovely, whimsical, bohemian woman, our moment is here. Headpieces are popping up on everyone, from runways to famous foreheads, and the average lady alike can get in on it, too, as a magical touch that can add uber brownie points for style and creativity. What a great alternative to feathers and headbands that have had their moment. If you are wondering how to wear the headpiece, think bohemian flare, and remember that this will be a fun and fitting piece for holiday parties. Let’s let our gypsy foreheads shine.

2. Gypsy Circus Headpiece, $46, available at Etsy

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Turbanarama

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Every girl deserves to wear a crown and lucky for us, ladies, the fashion industry’s current favorite is for the funky and daring. The turban is a hot trend that has been hitting the runway for the past few seasons and is now finally merging in to the mainstream supported by fashion’s bravest contenders. It can be styled in many different ways, like the examples above, but my personal favorite? The turban headband – it’s a no fuss, no mess alternative to a bad hair day and adds that extra ‘it’ factor to any look. Best of all, the turban is pre-styled for all you girls out there who love the trend but may not be as interested in DIY, and the colors and patterns are endless so you can really have fun with this look. I’ve traded in my crown for now, and I can’t wait to see how other style lovers will rock their turbans this Fall.

Pay homage to the memory of iconic star Elizabeth Taylor by emulating her classic, glamorous fashion sense. Whether you’re dressed to the nines or relaxing poolside, think 1950s-inspired nipped-waist silhouettes that show off an hourglass shape, with ample décolletage as your best accessory. Add some drama to your makeup routine with bold liquid liner: a nod to her title role in the cinematic spectacle Cleopatra. Turn a bad hair day into a chance to channel Taylor’s 60s signature turban with a turban-inspired headband. If there’s one type of accessory Elizabeth Taylor was known for, it’s diamonds. Whether they’re real or faux, a girl’s got to sparkle.
