St. Patrick’s Day is always a fun occasion to celebrate and luckily this year will be very easy to coordinate outfits because the pantone colour of the season is Emerald Green. Neon colours are huge this season, but I’m excited to see this shade outshining others, because year after year colours, such as pink, blue and yellow, take the limelight. With that said, this weekend is a perfect opportunity to shop and focus on this beautiful shade to try on and stand out from the ‘default’ colours everyone else is wearing! I think it’s no ‘luck’ the Irish are so stylish; fashion is being individual and standing out from the crowd with confidence, beautiful colours that often get overlooked is a perfect palette to do just that. St. Paddy’s day will be a fun day/night as usual, but when you’re holding your green beer this year, hold it in style!

It’s no secret that the United Kingdom is fashion forward and with St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, I can’t help but be curious about the trends being worn in Ireland. Just like Canada, they’re just as excited for warm weather and sunshine as we are! After reading numerous Irish fashion blogs, I’ve narrowed down the major trends they’re talking about: bomber jackets, cropped trousers and mixing black and white prints, sound familiar? And the best part about these trends is that they’re perfect transitional pieces to take us from winter to spring, almost as good as finding gold at the end of the rainbow!

My style is very feminine, with that said my “go-to” staple is the maxi skirt. It’s my favourite article to wear because wherever I’m going I can dress up my maxi in the snap of a finger. The maxi skirt can take you from day to night and with spring around the corner, what better opportunity do you need to transition into the new season with a skirt? If you’ve never owned a maxi skirt, opt for a solid neutral colour with a high waist; it’s very flattering with a feminine silhouette. For a casual event, my favourite way to wear my maxi skirt is with a simple t-shirt, statement necklace and a fitted leather jacket; it’s effortlessly cool, comfortable and, of course, fashionable. Maxi skirts are so beautiful dressed up, with a beautiful embellished blouse, belt and pumps, you’re sure to be the belle of the ball.

Along with the arrival of fresh air and blooming flowers, comes colourful fashion, in attempt to reflect the enlivening season ahead of us. The traditional coming of spring brings bold, vibrant hues, and soft, muted pastels. However, who says we have to stick to these guidelines? For Spring 2013, more designers such as Calvin Klein, Saint Laurent Paris, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors all incorporated head to toe black looks into their collections. Not entirely for an all black look on a hot day? Another relived trend brought back to us this spring, is the classic two-toned black and white look. Black for spring translates to classy, chic, sleek, and sexy. Push the boundaries along with us.

Splashes of Victorian style have been making a comeback in every realm of the fashion world; from ornate jewellery, to lace boots and high necked dresses. Girly, dainty, and covered, it’s not necessarily the easiest trend to wear. The key is to pair the trend with modern pieces so you don’t look like an extra from the set of a period-drama. For example, pair a ruffled Victorian blouse with a pair of bleach dyed cutoffs and Lita boots. Use a classic stylist’s trick – the messy one pocket tuck – to achieve an even greater balance between old and new. For dresses, accessorizes with statement pieces like fedoras or belts to take away from the stuffy feeling of a floor length, high-necked dress. Victorian-inspired jewellery is a great way to inspire a refined feel to any outfit; pearls and tarnished silver are staples of this beloved trend.

Lately, one of the biggest trends that I have been seeing everywhere is printed tights. I, just like everyone else, have gone absolutely crazy for them. I started noticing a rise in their popularity around the holidays, the funky trend transformed basic pieces like the little black dress into a whole different kind of outfit. I remember first spotting the trend in subtle ways like monotone argyle prints and polka dots in dark hues, but lately they have become brighter and bolder than ever before. Not since Cindy Lauper’s leg spray paint disaster in the ‘80s have we had such a fun, flirty way to accessorize our stems. With ombre and even scenic options, the possibilities are absolutely endless.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this year, nurture a budding spring love affair by falling all over again for my all time favorite trend of the season: pastels! For the past few years we have seen a fresh emergence of chalky colors in denim and I have to say I am not quite over this trend quite yet, in fact it is only becoming more loveable and versatile. Try tone-on-tone muted prints in a fun pedal pusher, paired with pastel florals-of-plenty ripe for the picking on the top-half in a girly cardigan or flowy blouse. If you’re a little reserved and classic in your approach to adding colour into your daily drab, take baby steps in the relationship and try a versatile utility bag for day or a pop of color in a belt or bangles layered up on your wrist. Sometimes all you need is to take a chance on something new to find true love in a new trend!

“I want this place to look like a garden, but a garden in hell,” Vogue’s iconic editor Diana Vreeland, famously said about her red apartment. “I can’t imagine being bored with it – it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.”
Hot on the heels of the launch of Vreeland’s documentary, Eye Has to Travel, couturiers personified said garden, adding ingenuity to Spring’s floral trend. Valentino, Chanel and Margiela’s runways all saw an ethereal aesthetic, where Great Gatsby glamour meets A Midsummer Night’s Dream mystique. Designers used novel accouterments to elevate the magic, including gilded brocade, tiered silk chiffon lace, and even custom-made organza false eyelashes – the latter by Karl Lagerfeld, no less.
To channel this enchanted garden party, opt for elegant yet unique pieces with bold embellishments, like the leather bodice on Free People’s floral maxi dress, or Haute Hippie’s sequined mini.

It’s impossible to find a bad photo of Olivia Palermo, whether she’s dolled up at an event or snapped by paparazzi while running errands in the streets of New York; Ms. Palermo is always put together nicely. After much fashionable admiration, I finally determined how she does it, and no, you don’t need the fortune of a socialite to accomplish her style.
Complimenting her body, Olivia wears classic pieces that are tailored to fit properly, when you have a variety of these staples to choose from your outfit is almost foolproof. Next, experiment with colours! Playing with colours and mixing prints will divide you from the crowd and exude originality. The final touches is my favourite step to bring a look together, by adding dramatic accessories, such as vintage jewelry and belts, you have the power to dress up an outfit effortlessly.

How many times have you opened up your closet and said to yourself ‘I have nothing to wear!’ This age old saying to us fashion-hoarders seems natural to become sick of your clothes in an ever-evolving trend-centric industry. Start off 2013 not by going on a diet, but purging the closet and holding on to basic staples that you can incorporate into several seasons worth of wear. Start with 3 piles, the keep, toss and donate, the latter being of great importance. Just because it is no longer on your it-list, doesn’t mean others do not covet it. Keep essentials that last the test of time, including basics like a classic single-breasted blazer, your favorite pair of denim, v-neck tees, anything striped, and that custom motorcycle leather jacket. Toss items that you have worn with too many unwanted holes in them and items that are simply overused. Donate anything you bought on a whim, still with the tags on that your mother-in-law bought you two Christmas’ ago, or is just down right out of date. Consigning is a great way to go because you can turn your clothes into cash and use it wisely to re-stock your wardrobe for upcoming seasons. I recommend doing this each season. Spend less on trend items and invest in the key staples, recycle out older items each season and you’ll never be bored! Out with the old and in with the new you this New Year!
