Vancouver Fashion Jobs – With Love, from Russia

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Over the Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks, the Russian fashion elite, deemed by the New York Times as the ‘Russian Fashion Pack’, dominated street-style blogs due to their opulent ensembles and zany choices – think wild prints, brocade, fur, jewels, hair accessories and killer shoes. The look has already transpired well into fall, see our post on baroque, but hot on the heels of the holiday season’s epic blockbuster, Anna Karenina, the Russian-inspired aesthete has blown-up. If this highly anticipated cinematic adaptation, which spawned it’s own capsule collection at Banana Republic, turns out anything close to last year’s obsession with Lisbeth Salander, this look is here to stay.

The Tolstoy classic has been reimagined, chock full of dreamy designer pieces from vintage Dior to Chanel. It also marks the acting debut for model of the moment and Karl Lagerfeld muse, Cara Delevigne, featured above in Chanel’s resort campaign. I love Karl’s dreamy take on the look, his pastel hued version of the Chanel tweed jacket, mixed with silk and feathers is to die for. I love the modern whimsical take on the troubled ingénue.

Fashion Jobs – Missoni and Holt Renfrew Collaboration

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

So when I walked into Bloor Street’s Holt Renfrew last week, there was literally an elephant in the room! Don’t worry, the people at Holt’s have not gone all safari on us right after they just started showcasing their fabulous winter street window displays. Instead, this particular elephant represents a special cause that is very dear to one of Italy’s most cherished fashion houses. The ever-so-sweet Margherita Missoni was in Toronto visiting to share her latest project for Orphan Aid Africa – a charity she started volunteering for nine years and is now the president of Orphan Aid Africa Italia. Missoni and Holt Renfrew decided to collaborate a limited edition, world-wide exclusive collection of stuffed elephants and bears sporting the famous Missoni prints. This adorable duo are $50 each where all funds will go to the charity further strengthening this cause. “To see the changes and impact we have made to better the lives of children is incredible and rewarding.”

As Nordstrom prepares its expansion into Canada, hr2 aims to compete with the upcoming launch of Nordstrom Rack. Focusing on new brands at lower prices, it looks as though Canadian shopping is getting quite the upgrade in the years to come.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Beach Attire

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

A beach day is headed our way, whether it’s later than sooner. But when it comes, we best be ready. The ideal wear for a day at the beach is fresh, easy, bright and simple. There is no need for fuss or formal-wear – let’s keep it real ladies, please, but not equate this to boring. Look for coverups in crochet, bright colors, rompers, and shawls that can double as sarongs. There are many places online to teach you how to tie a plethora of sarong styles, so you can find the look that suits you best. A fantastic beach bag and hat will tie it all together for your accessories quota – we especially love this Tory Burch “Feed” bag with proceeds going to two charitable organizations… that alone will give you a glow. Who knew you could help people out by a day in the sun and look fabulous doing it?!

1. Joe Fresh Straw Fedora, $12
2. Tory Burch FEED Bag, $50, available at Holt Renfrew
3. Zinke Romper,  $187, available at Shopbop
4. Anna Kosturova Crochet Dress, $259
5. Banana Republic Silk Scarf, $69
6. L*Space Camilla Dress, $148, available at Revolve Clothing

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Not Your Grandma’s Pantyhose

Monday, January 16th, 2012

There is no denying the weather, no matter what side of the map you’re on, is positively not suitable for sharing our gams with the world. So as girls, we get creative. Pantyhose-Hosiery–just the name evokes thoughts of doilies and baby powder. No longer may this description be fit with saucy options that may make granny weak in the knees and some a little more tame. These pieces are redefining our definition of what stockings are. Socks and tights habituate in the same department, so why not learn to combine? If you do (and you must), try layering in a similar colour, just different tones. High heels and socks combined is quite charming and a bit more bold. My best look is a sock just peaking out from over the top of your boot. Even if they are undercover, keep it fun like my favourite happy socks. Now you have no excuses for cold feet.

1. Wolford flame tights $65.00
2. Urban Outfitters $8.00

3. Wolford fringe lace socks $140.00

4. H&M $7.95

5. Happy Socks $13.00 at Gravity Pope
6. La Perla lace hose $77.00 at La Perla & Holt Renfrew

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Repellers Unite

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Ladies clad in colourful head scarves, leopard print tights and faux fur lined up to meet and greet with the original Man Repeller. Leandra Medine, the creator of the wildly popular blog that dishes over trends that women love and men hate, was in Toronto to celebrate the launch of Holt Renfrew’s new blog, Holt Muse. There’s much to be learned from Ms. Medine, and as it turns out, it’s not really about repelling men. At the end of the day, she says, you’re dressing to be creative (think: fashion as art) and to make yourself happy.

Here are five things we learned from Leandra:

Lesson One: Have yourself an “arm party,” that is, the term she coined for piling on accessories in all shapes, sizes, colours and textures. Take cues from Leandra here. Her favourite accessories brand is Dannijo.

Lesson Two: Mixing prints, especially animal prints, is a must. “Man Repellers like to unleash their inner feline,” she assures.

Lesson Three: Don’t be afraid of colour, especially below the belt. Leandra is a huge fan of coloured denim. J Brand is our pick, available at Holt Renfrew or Aritzia.

Lesson Four: Ankle boots for fall… or always. Repellers are all about big, bold, statement shoes. We like Jeffery Campbell, find them at Chasse Gardee or Browns.

Lesson Five: And finally, never take fashion too seriously, it should be fun. Her favourite piece of fashion advice: If it feels wrong, it looks right.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Animal Print

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

While a woman’s wardrobe is not complete without timeless pieces like a black blazer, a white cotton button-down shirt or a little black dress, new classics are staking claims on closet space. As seen on fall catwalks such as Chloe, Prada and The Row, clothes and accessories sporting an animal print are set to become wardrobe staples. Think cheetah and python for easy to wear looks that instantly add interest to the simplest of outfits. Wear a leopard print belt with your classic LBD or wear a snakeskin blazer, if you dare.

1. Michael Kors Scarf ($50), available at Holt Renfrew.

2. Zara Printed Blazer ($139)

3. Brave Leather Whiskey leopard belt ($125)

4. Elizabeth and James pencil skirt ($480), at SSense

5. Tory Burch calfskin wallet ($254), available at Shopbop.

6. Chloe scalloped flats ($495), at Net-A-Porter.
