Fashion Jobs – Weekend Away: Country Vs. City

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

I’m always inspired by Joe Zee’s posts for ELLE – he has an intuitive and witty approach to styling various occasions’ different ways. His outfits cover everything from baseball games, to first interviews or mom time, which got me thinking about how to style various activities for Summer. In the coming months, long weekends compose many of our mini escapes, and whether a weekend away means jetting to New York, Toronto, or Seattle, or hitting your country cottage or cabin, you will inevitably want to compose a look that meets the needs of your chosen locale. I’ve dreamed up two juxtaposing ensembles for two disparate trips – one for the sightseeing city vacation, and the other for country living. See my picks for each respective jaunt to ensure you are one happy camper, or happy city dweller.

Montreal Fashion Jobs – East Coast Style

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

In response to last week’s post on west coast style, I’ve scoured the racks to find pieces that fit the aesthetic of the east coast girl. While west coasters thrive on undone glamour, our eastern counterparts are heavy on crisp classics. Looks are slightly more tailored, and put together – take a cue from style maven Olivia Palermo who never seems to get it wrong (don’t miss her video for the Outnet here.) While she exudes easy style, not unlike California girls Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth, she focuses on timeless essentials like Breton striped blouses, tailored trenches, A-line skirts and stiletto pumps. Easterners always seem to have a more cosmopolitan air about them compared to west coast girls, a more structured look, and it shows head-to-toe.

1. Anthropologie Piped Peplum Blouse, $88
2. Club Monaco Alice Double-Knit Dress, $150
3. Zara Blazer with Box Shoulder, $159
4. Club Monaco Striped Cotton Shell, $40
5. Michael Kors Oversized Watch, $294, available at Shopbop
6. J. Crew Tartine Purse, $180
7. Babaton Alvin Shorts, $110, Aritzia
8. Zara Leather Court Shoe, $100

Calgary Fashion Jobs – The Darkest Hour: Black For Spring

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Along with the arrival of fresh air and blooming flowers, comes colourful fashion, in attempt to reflect the enlivening season ahead of us. The traditional coming of spring brings bold, vibrant hues, and soft, muted pastels. However, who says we have to stick to these guidelines? For Spring 2013, more designers such as Calvin Klein, Saint Laurent Paris, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors all incorporated head to toe black looks into their collections. Not entirely for an all black look on a hot day? Another relived trend brought back to us this spring, is the classic two-toned black and white look. Black for spring translates to classy, chic, sleek, and sexy. Push the boundaries along with us.

Fashion Jobs – Mad About Plaid

Monday, February 18th, 2013

The popularity of plaid in the fashion landscape has spanned many decades. The traditional pattern was originally known and manufactured as tartan, and used to identify and distinguish clans. Tartan was also worn in battle and used by Scottish rebels in the 17th century as a sort of unifier against the rule of the empire. The storied history of plaid has certainly only added to the popularity of the motif. In the ‘70s, plaid was used on ruffled, high collar shirts. In the ‘80s and Clueless era ‘90s it was all about preppy plaid – miniskirts and dresses that closely resembled the outfits worn by private school girls. Of course, the ‘90s were also a big decade for plaid with the grunge movement in both the fashion and music industry. A baggy plaid shirt, ripped up jeans and beat up old tee was a uniform for many – and arguably, still is today.

These days, plaid is weaving its way back into fashion in unexpected ways. Plaid maxi skirts have been a big trend of late, often designed in a way to pay homage to traditional kilts. Everything from pants, to denim, to crop tops are getting decked out with plaid – and the good news is, this is one trend that will probably never go out of style.

1. Free People Cameron Plaid Maxi Skirt, $148
2. Nasty Gal Plaid Drape Jacket, $129
3. For Love and Lemons Billy Sweater, $125
4. Topshop Sleeveless Stud Check Shirt, $45
5. Michael Kors Leather Bodice Dress, $1,398, available at Neiman Marcus
6. Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Dress, $938, available at FarFetch

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Colour Crush

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this year, nurture a budding spring love affair by falling all over again for my all time favorite trend of the season: pastels! For the past few years we have seen a fresh emergence of chalky colors in denim and I have to say I am not quite over this trend quite yet, in fact it is only becoming more loveable and versatile. Try tone-on-tone muted prints in a fun pedal pusher, paired with pastel florals-of-plenty ripe for the picking on the top-half in a girly cardigan or flowy blouse. If you’re a little reserved and classic in your approach to adding colour into your daily drab, take baby steps in the relationship and try a versatile utility bag for day or a pop of color in a belt or bangles layered up on your wrist. Sometimes all you need is to take a chance on something new to find true love in a new trend!

Montreal Fashion Jobs – Faux Fur

Sunday, December 9th, 2012

‘Tis the season to be cozy and warm, so why not style up your everyday staples with some faux-fur accents. Choosing the right fur options can be tricky if you’re looking to dress with a conscience, while making a lasting statement at the same time. I’ve always said it and will continue to emphasize that less is more when it comes to such a bold style gesture. Try a plush jacket and wear it with a great pair of flare jeans a la Rachel Zoe or a faux fur bag from H&M to pair with a chic tall riding boot. In the spirit of staying warm this winter I suggest opting for a furry pair of earmuffs, a leather coat with it’s own built in fur details and if you’re really style savvy and can pull it off, invest in a fun detachable fur collar to take your outfit to the next level of originality. Happy hunting…not literally of course!

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: Mom’s the Word

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

It’s always a joy at this time of the year to give to those in need and the ones we love the most. Nonetheless, as I get older, I find myself caring a little less each year about the endless materialistic side associated to the holiday and more about doing something good through volunteering or donating to a charity on behalf of my niece and nephew to teach them the value of giving back. This year my mom and I decided to forgo gift giving to one another and donate our time nearby instead to the charity Ancient Order of Doers Anonymous. There are several other charities in need out there for you to choose from if you feel inclined to help out those in need of a warm meal or a child who would love a teddy bear to snuggle up with at night, but in the meantime if you are feeling extra generous and have a little more to give this year, who better to spoil, on top of all your generous volunteering, than the mother you love most with some treats of her own!

You don’t have to spend a fortune, because let’s face it, your time is the most precious gift you can give to your loved ones, but I’ve rounded up my top 10 places to find those splendid splurges for Mom this Christmas! From jewelry with a special meaning to iconic fashion history, you’ll be checking off that list in no time and come out on top with good Karma for all your added do-good-giving in the New Year!

Calgary Fashion Jobs – A Chic Blanket

Sunday, November 18th, 2012

We Canadians deal with the harsh winters every year, battling another long and tiring season of cruel temperatures and seemingly endless snow. Thus being the reason why it is so important for us to source out a good quality, durable overcoat, to keep us warm and sane month-by-month. One of the most chic coat trends for winter is the blanket coat, which is a reoccurring trend brought back to us repeatedly on the New York Fashion Week Runways. Whether you opt for oversized volume, or focus more on soft textures, you’re bound to feel as if you haven’t left your bed all day. No, you won’t look like you are dragging yourself around, in fact, blanket coats range in prints, colors, and textures, enabling them to look very chic – one favorite is the white and grey striped Rag & Bone coat, featuring black leather trim and an elongated length, perfect for wearing dresses and tights!

Calgary Fashion Jobs – The Rock and Roll Riding Boot

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Equestrian-inspired pieces have long been a standing staple among the fashion elite – especially as the leaves start to turn – and as such, no cool weather season would be complete without a tribute to the iconic shoe behind the look: the riding boot. While the classic version of this wardrobe fixture will never go out of favor, as an updated take on an old favorite, the riding boots available for Fall 2012 do not disappoint. With a rock and roll edge right on-trend, these new boots are a little bit country, and a whole lot fierce. Look for lavish hardware, patent or matte finish leather, high heel and ankle varieties, all in jet black tones and pair them with everything from skirts and dresses to skinny jeans and leggings. Time to get out of the stables, head downtown and admit once and for all, we are fashionistas and we are just a little bit bad-ass.

2. Alexander McQueen McQ Chain Riding Boots, $800, available at Shopbop
3. BCBG MaxAzria Franz Riding Boot, $395 US
4. Tory Burch Calista High Heel Riding Boot, $525 US
