In response to last week’s post on west coast style, I’ve scoured the racks to find pieces that fit the aesthetic of the east coast girl. While west coasters thrive on undone glamour, our eastern counterparts are heavy on crisp classics. Looks are slightly more tailored, and put together – take a cue from style maven Olivia Palermo who never seems to get it wrong (don’t miss her video for the Outnet here.) While she exudes easy style, not unlike California girls Nicole Richie or Kate Bosworth, she focuses on timeless essentials like Breton striped blouses, tailored trenches, A-line skirts and stiletto pumps. Easterners always seem to have a more cosmopolitan air about them compared to west coast girls, a more structured look, and it shows head-to-toe.

Us west coasters have a laid back persona and it reflects in our style. Given the mild, yet tempestuous climate of the Pacific Northwest – the sun is out one minute, and it’s raining the next – layering is key. We generally combine function and form for durability (you never know where you’ll end up outdoors!), so looks tend to be versatile and casual – a kind of undone glamour that’s less structured than our eastern counterparts. Think a mild twist on the California girl: Lauren Conrad, Kate Bosworth, Rumi Neely, or Diane Kruger. Staple fabrics include breezy silks, distressed denim, and soft jersey knits for relaxed silhouettes; leather jackets toughen up floral frocks, and silk blouses dress up denim cutoffs. Outfits work overtime to take you from a bike ride on the seawall, to brunch with your grandmother, to dinner and drinks on a first date. See my essentials that capture the bohemian spirit of the west coast woman.

Gone are the days of tiny little cut offs, the Bermuda short is back in style and better than ever. I know it’s a strange concept to think of wearing Bermuda shorts again, I don’t know about you but my mind wanders to tourists and ill fitting khaki shorts, but nothing about this season’s hottest trend is frumpy or tacky. Seen on the runways of Rag & Bone, Chloe and Rachel Zoe, to name a few, the Bermuda short has been resurrected into a chic garment with bright colours and fun textures. Not to mention that this piece is flattering on nearly all body types and all ages, no one will be left out this spring.

As we head into April and warmer temperatures grace us with their presence, we’re feeling motivated and determined to finally crawl out of our winter blues. Spring is the time of the year for growth and rebirth, and that doesn’t just include within our environment; it means us too! Ladies, it’s time to let that skin breathe and opt for shorter lengths to shed some light on your skin.
The great thing about this must-have spring trend is it’s short yet reasonable length that will even be appropriate for the office! The short suit offers a classic tailored look with a modern edge, especially when paired up with other common trends for spring such as bold graphics, pastels, or jewel tones! You can also mix and match tops and bottoms, or create a more eccentric look by mixing contrasting textures.

Mother Nature can make dressing stylish challenging in these beyond freezing temperatures, however, us fashionistas will not let her win! There are many trendy winter skirts and dresses for this time of year, but why leave your shorts for only hot and sunny temperatures when you can be rocking your legs during cold months as well? Leather shorts are a versatile piece to play with whether you’re dressing up or down, they are a sure way to keep glamourous all year round.
Below is an inspiring list of suggestions of how to wear your shorts preppy or for a fun night out. I always suggest wearing tights with some fun pumps to get your look started!
1. Pair your shorts with a beautiful blazer, a top of neutral shade and frost your look with some fun costume jewelry and a colourful clutch or purse.
2. A silk blouse is classic and with a pair of leather shorts it just oozes sophistication. Add some red lipstick and you’re ready to rule any event!
3. My personal favourite way to wear leather shorts is with a simple neutral top, layered with long necklaces and a cool clutch with my hair in a bun.
If you’re feeling a little more laid back, a cozy knit sweater, tights and a pair of oxford shoes will keep you effortlessly chic and warm against the winter wrath.
With a variety of high waisted, colourful, embellished and classic black leather shorts to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Which look do you like best?

Mix these warm neutrals with exotic animal pieces and tribal-eseque accessories to take a walk inspired on the wild side. Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my!

Temperatures and hemlines are rising this summer and many of us are wearing shorts to stay cool and stylish in the heat. When selecting the right style for your shape, remember that the length should be determined by your body type and not the thermometer – opting for shorts that compliment your figure is essential for being comfortable and confident. Also, consider the venue and event; shorts you would wear to a barbecue likely won’t fly for a casual day at the office. Once you have found the most flattering fit, try experimenting with colour, pattern and fabric to really crank up the heat on your summer shorts collection.
