Toronto Fashion Jobs – Summer Sunnies

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

For the most part, we tend to accessorize a little more simply during the summer season. This is in part due to the heat, and the lack of need for layering. Knowing this, choosing the right accessories for your summer outfit are even more important. The perfect pair of sunglasses has the opportunity to really elevate and pull together a summer look. Trends for summer eyewear tend to be diverse, but choosing something that compliments your face shape is a crucial aspect to selecting your ideal pair.

For round faces, choose angular sunglasses. A great option is the classic Wayfarer frame from Ray Ban. Alternatively, if you have a square shaped face, be sure to go with round sunnies. This year, round sunglasses a la Lennon are making a big comeback, so go ahead and indulge your inner hippie.

Long faces work best with oversized sunglasses, as they work well to balance out the proportions on a long face. If you have an oval face shape, any style of sunglasses will work on you. Since this face shape allows you to be a bit more daring, check out Tom Ford’s famous Nikita sunglasses. These sunglasses are super chic, and can be work with a casual outfit for instant cool girl appeal. Finally, if you have a heart shape face, try a cool pair of aviators. The round edges will help draw the focus downward on the face. Whichever pair of sunnies you choose this summer keep these simple tips in mind to elevate your favourite summer outfit!

1Ray Ban Original Wayfarer, $150
2Free People Goodnight Moon sunglasses, $18
3. Chloe Caspia 58mm sunglasses, available at Nordstrom, $311
4. Tom Ford Nikita sunglasses, available at Neiman Marcus, $360
5. Le Specs Baron Aviator sunglasses, available at Urban Outfitters, $69.00

6. Diane Von Furstenberg DVF536S Kendra 026 Smoke 59, available at Clearly Contacts, $139.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Swimsuit Season

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The increasingly lovely weather in the past few weeks across the country has signalled summer’s imminent arrival. Summer typically fashion has a laid back feel; flowy maxi dresses, denim cut-offs, oversized tees. One important part of summer fashion that is sometimes overlooked is finding the right swimsuit and related accessories. Swimwear often reflects trends that we see on the runway, and in recent years, more brands and large retailers are offering their own versions of beach wear.

This year, the trends in swimwear are continuing the “bolder is better” motto from the last few years. Cut-outs were a big trend on the runway for Spring/Summer ’13, working their way into oversized tees, and dresses. The itty bitty Eagle Shadow Bikini from Australian brand One Teaspoon is an example of this trend carrying over to swimwear.
Graphic prints and bold, colourful patterns are also quickly becoming a prominent trend in beach wear this season. Wildfox offers many different variations of this style, with one pieces featuring everything from graphic animal prints to the Union Jack.

For beach goers looking for something more feminine, check out the bohemian inspired crochet one pieces from Lisa Maree. These ornate, lacey bathing suits are not what you typically think of when you think swimwear, and are definite standout pieces.

A great cover-up and beach towel are as important as the swimsuit itself. For a real taste of California beach lifestyle, check out Jen’s Pirate Booty. Her beautiful, ethereal garments can function both for a day at the beach and also as a dress for drinks afterwards. For an out of the ordinary beach towel, Lauren Moshi`s illustrated hippie-girl towel is a great option.

1. One Teaspoon Eagle Shadow Bikini, $129
2. Wildfox French Flowers Kitty Lovelock Ruffle One Piece, $188
3. Lisa Maree Crochet Monokini, available at Free People, $151
4. Jen’s Pirate Booty Beach Bum Kaftan, $132
5. Lauren Moshi Beach Towel, available at Bloomingdales, $57

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Blogger Profile: Girls of TO

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Meet Dani & Ally; the duo behind one of Canada’s biggest fashion and lifestyle blogs, Girls of TO. Girls of TO’s mission is simple, to bring to readers all the Toronto has to offer, whether that be fashion trends, event coverage, beauty tips or product reviews. It’s obvious that the girls have a lot of fun with their work, making the blog an always upbeat, entertaining read. I asked the girls a few questions to help shed some light on what goes on behind the scenes during the blogging process:

Zoe: What was the inspiration behind starting Girls of TO?

Dani & Ally: We figured since the dream of having our own TV show may have been a little far-fetched, we needed a different creative outlet to talk about what we loved and to share it with women just like us. We’ve been best friends and neighbours since the age of five so it was only natural that we had similar interests and goals. The science behind it all is very simple: we’re girls, we live in TO, and we love fashion.

Z: What’s your favourite part of blogging?

D & A: The best part about blogging has definitely been the wonderful people we’ve met. Canada has incredible talent and being able to see it unfold and witness it first-hand is always an unforgettable experience.

Z: Who is your go-to designer?

D & A: It’s hard to pick just one designer. With so much talent in Toronto alone, sticking to a select few can be a challenge. Caitlin Power has stood out to us since the first time we saw one of her collections in 2010 at the Drake Hotel. Another favourite is Lucian Matis for obvious reasons: he’s insanely gifted. No Toronto girly-girl can go wrong with Pink Tartan. And when it comes to picking out the perfect bag we always rely on Nella Bella.

Z: What trends should we avoid this season?

D & A: We’ve noticed a lot of metallic on the runways all over the world for S/S 2013, and although we love it, we think it could be tricky to pull off. No trend should be completely avoided if the person interested in it thinks it’s right for them. We don’t consider ourselves “trend followers” so we’ll let Coco Chanel give advice on this one: The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you

Z: What trends should we embrace this season?

D & A: Stripes please! Flattering prints and anything monochrome. The best trends to follow are the ones that won’t go out of style. When you’re investing in a piece of clothing, designer or not, you should buy it because you love it and feel good in it.

Z: Any advice for readers on how to start their own blogs?

D & A: Although blogging is harder than some people think, the formula is quite easy. As long as you love what you’re writing about and have the passion to commit to it, the rest falls into place. Just as designers edit their collections, bloggers need to do the same with their content. Write to the people you want to attract – more often than not you’ll find that your readers are a reflection of yourself.

Z: In your experience, is Canada a harder place to be a fashion blogger or an easier place?

D & A: We think it’s not so much about where you’re blogging but what you’re blogging. Anyone can write about what they love – it only becomes challenging when they have expectations of what they want in return. We can’t all be sitting front row at Paris fashion week, but you get back what you give and with a lot of hard work, creativity, and the right connections, you can rise to the top no matter where you are.

Z: What are your goals for Girls of TO five years from now?

D & A: We’d be lying if we didn’t say we have big plans for the coming years, but we don’t want to give away any secrets just yet. Ideally we’d love to grow our content and our team so that the women in Toronto have a one-stop-shop for everything in the city.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Avant-Garde Trends: Would You Wear Them?

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

In the fashion world, there is something out there for everyone. Every season there are no trends and fads that will come and go and come back all over again. If one has the personality for it, what some may find over the top is actually someone else’s typical daily outfit. Over the past few years, certain pieces and ensembles have caught my attention with their outgoing designs. I wouldn’t be surprised if these have made their way into the closets of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Nautical Living

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

There is something about those horizontal stripes that give a feeling of ease, comfort and nautical living. Whether you’re getting ready to head out into the open sea or not, don’t be afraid to add some stripes to your wardrobe. Try drawing some inspiration from the slew of designers that used this pattern in their Spring/Summer 2013 runway shows including Dolce & Gabbana, Moschino and Ralph Lauren, just to name a few. Though not all the pieces they debuted fall into the nautical category, one thing is clear, this season, stripes have made a huge come back and they’re here to stay.

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Lucite

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

Lucite, a clear plastic material, has been seen walking its way up into even the top designers runway shows, ranking it one of the biggest trends for 2013. From clutches and platforms, to bangles and belts, lucite is being used on and throughout just about every accent piece you could think of! It’s minimalistic and elegant, contributing a sense of glamour and class to even the most understated look. The transparency is enduring, without baring it all. If you’re not comfortable flaunting a solely lucite piece, exposing more than a glimpse of your rather personal side, opt for pieces with more subdued see-through shapes or accents. The classic black pump with a lucite heel is the perfect combination of femininity and edge, or a lucite boot worn with frilled ankle socks would be sassy and sweet. Regardless of whether you venture out of your comfort zone or not, this trend brings the freshness of spring offering a versatile lightness.

1. Jeffrey Campbell Soiree Platform, $123, available at Nasty Gal
2. Jeffrey Campbell Clear Platform in Beige, $123, available at Miss KL
3. Vince Camuto Lucite Bangle, $98, available at DJ Premium
4. Luminous Cuff, 41, available at Nasty Gal
5. Maison Martin Margiela Faux Diamond Ring Set, $464, available at Shopbop
6. Topshop Metal Arm Round Sunglasses, $25
7. CC Skye Bright Love Lucite Clutch, $269, available at Shopbop

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Spring Into Your Wardrobe

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

It’s officially Spring and I can’t be more excited! Mixing bright colours into outfits inspired by the sunshine is what we’ve been waiting for since the beginning of fall. With that said, the transition from winter to springtime can be an adventurous period to play with different looks. The key word now is “layering.” My favourite way to reintroduce spring fashion into our everyday lives is layering those pieces with winter staples, because it’s still far too cold to sporting short dresses, however, by adding a cool leather jacket, tights and booties- it’s a whole different look you can get away with now. Another fun look to play with is rolling up boyfriend jeans with funky pumps and tops layered with warm winter cozy sweaters! Being practical and stylish can go hand and hand this time of year, so why not experiment and have a little fun?

Toronto Fashion Jobs – 2013 Men’s Style Stars To Watch

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Eddie Redmayne (Actor):
Eddie Redmayne is now a common household name after his stellar performance in Les Miserables. Even after movie buzz died down, the discussion over Eddie did not. Not only is Eddie catching the eye of producers, but of designers as well. This year, he stared in a fashion campaign for Burberry, alongside Cara Delevingne. His chiseled face and stunning eyes are enough to reel us in at first glance, and his fresh, slender, formal attire keeps our gaze. His style and fast fame is being compared to that of Ryan Gosling.

Logan Lerman (Actor):
Logan has been immersed in the film industry since he was a child. Growing up with a quirky yet shy personality didn’t always leave him in the front spotlight. After we watched his heartbreaking story in Perks of Being A Wallflower in 2012, we were smitten. Logan has shown us more of a conscious effort in the wardrobe department, and wears colours that compliment his piercing blue eyes. His look is very indie with a classic feel, and he shows us that not blending in, allows your true personality to stand out; fame or not for fame.

Skylar Astin (Actor):
Admit it, you fell in love with his corny, “nice guy” with an edge character on Pitch Perfect. Aside from the funny guy jokes and Glee-esque form of singing, Skylar is an all around down-to-earth guy who loves mixing vintage and modern pieces. In October 2012, he reported on his style to August Man Magazine stating, “I like to look like I accidentally put myself together really well. Yet I try to adapt to wherever I am going style-wise.” Secrets are out that he is rumored to be a part of Pitch Perfect 2, alongside Rebel Wilson!

Karl Edwin Guerre (Photographer):
A talented artist, whom is most often seen behind the camera, now has to get used to being the one photographed on film. His most recent works have been published in American Vogue and GQ, and his love for fashion and photography translates through his style. Since becoming a photographer, Karl’s style has transformed drastically from underground hip-hop to 50’s gentleman, often-sporting tweed jackets, plaid, and oxfords. With his work and style taking off, this is only the beginning of a great fashion career for him.

Matt Bomer (Actor):
You may recognize him most for his role of a sexy stripper in Magic Mike, but this striking actor is breaking out of the shadows from behind Channing Tatum and making a memorable name for himself. His TV show White Collar is still signing for continuing seasons and he has already in production for four other projects this year. Speaking on his character in White Collar, Matt says, “I’ve taken a lot of notes from him. Throw on a tie bar, cuff links, and a fedora, and I feel like a different guy.” I like to think of him as the next Jon Hamm.

Justin Timberlake (Singer/Songwriter):
There’s no doubt that JT has been a favourite of many since his rise to fame as a child star, but after leaving the music scene in 2006 to focus on his acting career, JT is officially back from his musical hiatus. His new voice brings a new look alongside it, offering the more sensual, gentleman side of him. With fresh, black and white suits, and menswear designer, Tom Ford, behind him, it’s safe to say Justin won’t be looking back on his N’SYNC days.

David Gandy (Model):
Over the past few years, British model, David Gandy, has worked his way from beginner model, to one of the top international male model. He was first signed in 2001, and modeled for Dolce & Gabbana in 2006. But it was the 2012 London Olympic Games were he was the only male model featured in the catwalk for the opening ceremony, and has since been seen on an international level. David’s fit body and healthy glow is what has reporters saying he is “changing the face of fashion.” His style is tailored casual, often mixing denim with sharp blazers. You may recognize him from his most recent work with Banana Republic’s Mad Men Campaign.

Reggie Yates (TV Presenter):
Reggie is used to being the center of attention, as a full-time UK TV and Radio Host. However, Reggie finds himself in a different limelight, being admired by fashion designers and considered a breakout fashion mogul. Reggie’s laidback personality and eccentric style is gaining him recognition on all frontiers. He loves classic tailoring with a modern twist, and often incorporates accenting colours into his ensembles. Will.i.am joked around last season on BBC’s The Voice by calling him the “fashion Obama.”
