When summer time rolls around, I find that everyone tends to get a little Mediterranean, especially now that the bohemian trend has marked its territory in the fashion world. We’ve seen the braids, the maxi skirts, the head pieces, and now beaded clothing.
Beading is a huge part of Mediterranean culture, it adds a touch of whimsy and makes a piece more interesting to look at. This past fashion week season, many collections featured some beading accents. From H&M to Valentino, this trend proved its diversity from casual to formal wear and I absolutely adore it.

No, we’re not talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey” even though so many people love using the “Fifty Shades” line I couldn’t help myself either. Valentine’s Day may be next week but you all should know that this colour is also becoming popular for Spring 2013 so use the holiday for practice before getting into full swing with the rouge.
Red has become such a classic colour expressing so many things that define its impact on the fashion world from complexity, passion to sophistication. However, apart from the traditional lipstick reds that would first pop into our head, let’s not forget that there are tones galore to play with now!

February is still cold so why not warm up to darker wine and burgundy hues that still make a great statement.

The mini is back and popping all over the place where a bright poppy red will make sure to turn heads.

There are so many beautiful stone rings embracing browns and reds, together, complimenting their collaborations with gold.

Orange-red is a colour I am starting to obsess over more and more and can you blame a gal? Wearing a pair of blood orange heels accents any outfit especially when wearing neutral pieces. Everyone will be looking down at your legs.

Red and pink floral prints combine the right mix of strong and soft especially on silk materials and look fantastic with a pair of jeans or leggings.

Coral! Over the past year we have seen jeans in every colour of the rainbow but I must say that coral has always stuck with me. Just like the floral pattern above, coral is the right combination of red, pink and white.

Undoubtedly, Valentine’s Day is the most anticipated time of the year for most love struck couples, refueling that deep connection. The romantic day devoted to your one and only adds unwelcomed stress and can be quite daunting for any couple, no matter how long you two have been hitched. For those of us who find it impractical and stake out each Valentine’s Day despite having a reason to celebrate, remember the wise words of Christopher Marlowe, a true poetic visionary from the 50s, “Money can’t buy love, but it improves your bargaining position.”
Whether you have left it to the last minute for another year (ahem, boys!), or have struggled for weeks coming up with ideas of your own and have resented the idea of asking her friends, (or even worse, her mother), then you’ve landed among the Valentine’s Day Gods and straight into Cupid’s arms. Here are some quality gifts that will display your immense love for one another, and don’t fall under the “typical” cheesy gift guide category. Classified as the perfect princess, or subtle sweetie, these gifts are destined to please all.
1. Valentino Rockstud Patent Leather Point Toe, $595, available at Holt Renfrew

Over the Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks, the Russian fashion elite, deemed by the New York Times as the ‘Russian Fashion Pack’, dominated street-style blogs due to their opulent ensembles and zany choices – think wild prints, brocade, fur, jewels, hair accessories and killer shoes. The look has already transpired well into fall, see our post on baroque, but hot on the heels of the holiday season’s epic blockbuster, Anna Karenina, the Russian-inspired aesthete has blown-up. If this highly anticipated cinematic adaptation, which spawned it’s own capsule collection at Banana Republic, turns out anything close to last year’s obsession with Lisbeth Salander, this look is here to stay.
The Tolstoy classic has been reimagined, chock full of dreamy designer pieces from vintage Dior to Chanel. It also marks the acting debut for model of the moment and Karl Lagerfeld muse, Cara Delevigne, featured above in Chanel’s resort campaign. I love Karl’s dreamy take on the look, his pastel hued version of the Chanel tweed jacket, mixed with silk and feathers is to die for. I love the modern whimsical take on the troubled ingénue.

If you’re feeling inspired by the latest Fall and Winter fashions there is one place you can turn to these days for creative reinforcements that won’t break the bank. With a plethora of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) websites out there you can keep up with the latest trends and minimize the expense of footing the bill for the seasons favorite looks. Take a chance on creating something original with the help of fashions eagle eyes, and be the first to set off a wave of trends in your office or group of friends.
A quick peek on sites like A Pair and A Spare, Honestly…WTF, or I Spy DIY will instill your love of the flare that something as simple as a hot glue gun and rhinestones can produce. Take for instance your worn out old black leather clutch, why not spice it up with a tutorial on how to make it pop like Valentino’s more expensive version by adding studs or a tassel (as seen on I Spy DIY)? Jazz up the neckline of your basic white tee by creating your own woven chain collar necklace (brought to you by Honestly…WTF), or for a more daring fashion statement why not take something old and make it you again by crafting a matching clutch from the extra fabric of that cute cocktail dress you just dared to reconstruct (thanks to A Pair and A Spare).
There are so many other great sites for the jewelry, accessory and fashion DIY obsessed. Here’s a list of my Top 10 Favorites spanning from our very own Canadian backyard, and across the globe:
1. A Pair and A Spare - Hong Kong
2. I Spy DIY – New York
3. Honestly…WTF - California
4. Stripes + Sequins - New York
5. Glitter & Glue - LA
6. Because I’m Addicted - LA
7. P.S.- I Made This… - New York
8. Thanks I Made It - Washington, DC
9. Park & Cube - London, UK
10. My Little Secrets - Toronto

While acting honours were given to both Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer for their performances in “The Help” they both received best-dressed ensembles as well. Davis shined in a white, Grecian gown by Marchesa with gold detailing, while Spencer wore another Tadashi Shoji in a sparkling, draped silver gown hitting her in all the right places.

Many red carpet hits had pops of colour with Michelle Williams in a red Valentino with lace cap sleeves, along with matching Lanvin clutch, heels and Fred Leighton for Forevermark jewels. Emily Blunt was a knockout in a jade-hued Oscar de la Renta gown with a bow shoulder detail and sexy slit. Kyra Sedgwick just gets better with age and looks red hot in a cutout Pucci gown. And va-va-va voom Sofia Vergara worked that hot pink Marchesa like a pro.

Emma Stone looked elegant in a black, tea-length Alexander McQueen number with a lace bodice. Other black show stoppers were Angelina Jolie’s backless satin Jenny Packham gown paired with gold, vintage jewelry, a Louis Vuitton clutch and Stacy Keibler in a lace Marchesa gown.

Riskiest choices came from “Bridesmaids” star Rose Byrne, who opted to wear pants on the red carpet, being a white, beaded Elie Saab jumpsuit and Zoe Saldana in a white Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci gown and Tiffany jewels.

Halloween is the time of year when we all get to step out of character and into an over-the-top costume. If you’re like me and would rather forgo the cheesy, tacky nurse costumes, why not celebrate the creepy, kooky, frightening holiday in style? Look to fashion and the 2011 haute couture collections for some inspiration. Think I’m a little off my rocker? Just think of Carine Roitfeld and her vampire’s ball. Who knew the undead could be so chic?

What do Twiggy, Edie Sedgwick and Foxy Brown (We’re talking Beyonce in her Austin Powers garb) have in common? Not only are they mod style icons but they can also work a killer frock!
The sixties are back this fall and it’s groovy baby! Think short straight-lined dresses, cute tunics, swing coats, minis and tall boots. Key elements are bold colours, geometric prints and big buttons. Don’t forget to complete the look with some over-the-top black eye makeup.
The times were all about being fun and fabulous. In our opinion, that kind of mentality should never go out of style! So let these looks inspire you to free your inner mod girl. You might even find yourself shimmying along to the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout”.

Sequins, studs, embroidery, beading and bows – just a little embellishment can go a long way in your wardrobe. Ideal for highlighting your best feature or adding a sense of festivity to your look, embellished clothing creates instant glamour, while adorned accessories are a luxurious balance for an understated outfit. Moderation is key here – for maximum results select a single ornate focal piece in a muted tone and pair it with pure self-confidence.
