Leather is the least likely textile to go hand-in-hand with spring, but this season, designers decided to play up on this abstract movement, enforcing the truthful motto, “opposites attract.”
It has been believed that leather is only acceptable and manageable during the cooler months, primarily featured in Fall/Winter collections. There are two key points to obey when making the sleek leather transition into spring: A) Ensure you keep a lighter colour palette – no black or dark brown leather jackets acceptable! Brands like Marni, Miu Miu, Thierry Mugler, and Fendi opted for a balance of white and pastels, maintaining a fresh look. B) Factor shape onto the drawing board when selecting leather pieces to update your wardrobe. Plenty of leather skater skirts with cutouts, and leather moto vests are huge in major retailers right now.
Will you help break the myth this season?

Us west coasters have a laid back persona and it reflects in our style. Given the mild, yet tempestuous climate of the Pacific Northwest – the sun is out one minute, and it’s raining the next – layering is key. We generally combine function and form for durability (you never know where you’ll end up outdoors!), so looks tend to be versatile and casual – a kind of undone glamour that’s less structured than our eastern counterparts. Think a mild twist on the California girl: Lauren Conrad, Kate Bosworth, Rumi Neely, or Diane Kruger. Staple fabrics include breezy silks, distressed denim, and soft jersey knits for relaxed silhouettes; leather jackets toughen up floral frocks, and silk blouses dress up denim cutoffs. Outfits work overtime to take you from a bike ride on the seawall, to brunch with your grandmother, to dinner and drinks on a first date. See my essentials that capture the bohemian spirit of the west coast woman.

With SXSW kicking off the festival circuit this past week in Austin and Coachella’s double-header festivities a few weeks away, it’s time to start thinking about festival season. Depending on where you’re headed, the weather can be slightly tumultuous: sunny days and chilly nights in the Gorge at Sasquatch, blistering heat in Palm Springs at Coachella, and humid days in Montreal at Osheaga all call for layered looks.
I love Free People’s easy embellished basics – somehow the label manages to make jersey tees and skirts look flattering and unique. Paired with a few great accessories, they can go a long way.
Ikat is another big print this season, which fits in nicely with the festival theme. Be sure to take an anorak or poncho, plus a scarf and boots to combat evening chills or double as a picnic blanket, barrier for mud, etc. Peruse my picks below to prep you (rain or shine!) for some bohemian clad adventures and seriously awesome tunes.

Miuccia Prada’s womenswear collection for Autumn Winter 2013 captured the designer’s vision of “raw elegance” through disheveled glamour. Models strutted down the runways, hair unkempt and lips rouged, to a Hitchcock Heroine film noir music motif. The look juxtaposes high and low elements, where vintage silk slips pair effortlessly under tailored coats and luxe furs. Waistlines are nipped and shoulders exposed, riffing on Fourties’ style silhouettes. To channel Miuccia’s vision, pair plush pieces like Club Monaco’s faux fur vest over a simple black dress, or a rich leather skirt under a cable knit cardigan. Metallic embellishments add an edgy finishing touch here, transcending these ensembles between late night and early morning. As always, this Prada girl is modern, mysterious and perfectly undone.

It’s no coincidence that countless of-the-moment designers reinvent themselves by going back to basics: take Raf Simons, the master of minimalism who recently landed Dior; Alexander Wang, who defined New York street style by way of basic T-Shirts, succeeding Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga; or Phoebe Philo, a woman who singlehandedly redefined power accessories for alpha females everywhere at Celine.
The most recent display of modern minimalism, however, is surely a product of Nicolas Ghesquière on the precipice of his departure from a fifteen-year tenure at Balenciaga. His Spring/Summer 2013 collection for the French house defined the beauty of sensuality found in simple contrasts: crisp suits or white shirts suddenly come to life when paired against flouncy skirts or cutout midriffs.
January is the perfect month to personify his minimalist iteration through unique basics. Add intrigue through details like unexpected cutouts, plush fabrics, or black and white juxtapositions. Who knew basic blouses, pea coats and blue jeans could be the antidote to January’s blues? Take a look at our twist on classic pieces that will keep you looking fresh until winter ends.

As the cool breath of winter tickles our necks and it becomes time to really layer up for the weather, you may not even consider the versatile look of a vest. Truth be told, vests are a very adaptable piece to incorporate into any wardrobe and can be worn with several different outfits. Try layering over leather or cashmere to stay warm at night, or atop a printed asymmetrical cozy sweater and a denim shirt for a more casual daytime look. Be it a skin, fur, down or knit, play with all your layering options for multiple, versatile looks and be the ‘vest dressed’ at your event!

Take a cue from the Rodarte sisters this season and add a little faux Sherpa to your winter attire. For fall/winter 2012, the American duo showcased unexpected elements of shearling on coats and sweaters, mixed in with maxi skirts and rough knits, for a rugged, yet romantic aesthetic inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s, Australia. To channel the Outback, incorporate subtle details on vests or jackets, or go full-on with a piece like Aritzia’s Merritt jacket by TNA. The fabric offers versatility, whether you crave a cultural nomadic look, or a more feminine vibe, these pieces layer well to help you brave the elements in true rustic style.

Over the Spring 2013 Fashion Weeks, the Russian fashion elite, deemed by the New York Times as the ‘Russian Fashion Pack’, dominated street-style blogs due to their opulent ensembles and zany choices – think wild prints, brocade, fur, jewels, hair accessories and killer shoes. The look has already transpired well into fall, see our post on baroque, but hot on the heels of the holiday season’s epic blockbuster, Anna Karenina, the Russian-inspired aesthete has blown-up. If this highly anticipated cinematic adaptation, which spawned it’s own capsule collection at Banana Republic, turns out anything close to last year’s obsession with Lisbeth Salander, this look is here to stay.
The Tolstoy classic has been reimagined, chock full of dreamy designer pieces from vintage Dior to Chanel. It also marks the acting debut for model of the moment and Karl Lagerfeld muse, Cara Delevigne, featured above in Chanel’s resort campaign. I love Karl’s dreamy take on the look, his pastel hued version of the Chanel tweed jacket, mixed with silk and feathers is to die for. I love the modern whimsical take on the troubled ingénue.

Saddle up and prepare to wrangle pure style in this summer trend as designers’ global travels and inspiration will have you channeling the wild wild west. To find your inner cowgirl cool, look no further than the collections of Marc Jacobs, Isabel Marant and Thakoon where their pairings held a mix of traditional prairie inspiration and modern day-style chic. Opt for a more contemporary look by donning your classically rich embroidered button-downs and cowboy boots with southwestern native prints and patterns to play up the popular tribal trend with an authentic gaucho vibe. For a well-rounded interpretation of this western trend, complete your rodeo ride with the perfect pair of flared boot cut denim and yee-haw!

Menswear was one of the biggest trends for women in 2010 and it looks as though the androgynous look is here to stay for 2012. There’s a time for flirty, feminine dressing, but lately we’re intrigued by gutsy girls who can pull off those pieces that are borrowed from the boys. It doesn’t mean sacrificing your femininity either – for example, opt for a short, flowing skirt with a blazer and tee. Here are five menswear inspired pieces to help you suit up like the boys:
1. Style inspiration: Annie Hall (1977).
2. Double Breasted Blazer ($49.99), available at H&M.
3. Nightend Tux Shirt ($69.99), available at Madewell.
4. Ankle Boot ($40), available at Zara.
5. Urban Renewal Boys’ Menswear Vest ($39.00), available at Urban Outfitters.
