Montreal Fashion Jobs – Spring Trend: Cool Cutouts

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Spring runways saw an array of cutouts this season, baring midriffs, shoulders, and lower backs at the likes of Charlotte Ronson, Balenciaga and Alexander Wang. The style showcases subtle pieces of skin through mesh knits, loose silks and sheer overlays: see Ronson’s breezy surfer inspired collection below. To get the look, imbue your wardrobe with soft pieces like this flirty dress from Suno, or Nasty Gal’s relaxed knit sweater. Even accessories have taken to the trend, especially on shoes. I love Elizabeth and James’ cutout booties for summer – they will look great paired with shorts, white jeans or sundresses.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Inspired by Prada Fall 2013

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Miuccia Prada’s womenswear collection for Autumn Winter 2013 captured the designer’s vision of “raw elegance” through disheveled glamour. Models strutted down the runways, hair unkempt and lips rouged, to a Hitchcock Heroine film noir music motif. The look juxtaposes high and low elements, where vintage silk slips pair effortlessly under tailored coats and luxe furs. Waistlines are nipped and shoulders exposed, riffing on Fourties’ style silhouettes. To channel Miuccia’s vision, pair plush pieces like Club Monaco’s faux fur vest over a simple black dress, or a rich leather skirt under a cable knit cardigan. Metallic embellishments add an edgy finishing touch here, transcending these ensembles between late night and early morning. As always, this Prada girl is modern, mysterious and perfectly undone.

Calgary Fashion Jobs – Holographic Elements

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Transitional dressing between seasons can be dismal, especially post-holidays, so I was delighted when I came across See by Chloé’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection for mid-season fashion inspiration. In its third season, the contemporary womenswear label featured a more effervescent approach to its usual bohemian aesthete, through the use of metallic sheen. The result? A collection that felt simultaneously retro and modern, where quilted metallic bomber jackets and silver ankle boots stand up against sixties inspired maxi dresses, slouchy pant-suits and silk chiffon frocks.

Paris’ diffusion label wasn’t the only brand to recently showcase metallic. Holographic hues and iridescent embellishments showed up on various resort shows, and most notably, Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 13 RTW collection. To invoke instant insouciant cool-girl chic a la Stella and Chloé, opt for small pops of sparkle, and the trend will speak for itself.

3. Zara Printed Velvet Kimono, $139

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Holiday Gift Guide: The “It” Girl

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

We all have that friend who always looks impossibly chic, even if she’s just rolled out of bed. Her natural style becomes so iconic that we recognize her on a first name basis: from retro mavens Audrey and Edie, to modern muses Gwyneth and Alexa, this ‘it’ girl always has her finger on the pulse. So what can you buy the girl who has seemingly everything? Well, a lot! Here are my picks that will impress your most fashionable friend.

Grace Coddington: A memoir – Ever since The September Issue was released, Grace Coddington stole the limelight from Anna Wintour for her artistic vision as Vogue’s Creative Director for the past twenty years. At age 70, the former model’s memoirs span quite a few fashionable decades. Definitely worth a read.
Leopard Gloves – This pair of gloves is the perfect accessory to spruce up any outfit during the winter season and the animal print is equal parts trendy and classic.

Bracelet Bangle – Kate Spade’s American panache somehow always manages to strike a perfect balance between timeless tradition and frivolous fun. With sentiments like ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘Get Carried Away,’ these bangles encapsulate the perfect package of wit and glamour.

Trinket Box – A little taste of Paris, minus the lineup at Ladurée.

Sherpa Coat – Any fashion-forward girl will find a way to look glamorous even when the weather doesn’t permit. Aritzia’s faux-fur Sherpa coat exudes elegance and ease and pairs well with cocktail attire or jeans.

iPhone Case – Keeping in-tune with the aforementioned tech-accessories, Moschino’s iPhone case couldn’t be any cuter, right down to the pretty red bow.

iPad Case – Any ‘it’ girl knows that fashion doesn’t stop at just clothes, which is why even her iPad case is designer. This Rebecca Minkoff design screams fashion all the way. Black? Check. Studs? Check. Gold? Check.
Tote Bag – Every girl has to have a great bag and this season Phillip Lim’s tote is a must have.

Perfect Pumps – You can’t go wrong with a great pair of pumps and this pair combines three classic shades: red, nude and black.
The Right Wallet – Every fashion it-girl needs to own something by a brand with a cult following for bona fide trendsetter status – cue in Comme des Garcons. The Japanese label creates a zeitgeist each season for it’s avant-garde designs and this wallet means that she can own a piece of it too.

1. Grace Coddington: A Memoir, $30, available at Indigo
2. Club Monaco Nicole Haircalf Glove, $89
3. Kate Spade Idiom Bangle, $32
4. Macaron Limoge Trinket Boxes, $13 each, available at The Cross Décor & Design
5. Moschino Dress iPhone Case, $78, available at Shopbop
6. Rebecca Minkoff Spikey Studs iPad Case, $202, available at Shopbop
7. Phillip Lim Tote, $895, available at Net-a-Porter
8. Zara Vamp Shoe, $40
9. Wilfred Le Fou Laboratoire Coat, 298, available at Aritzia
10. Comme des Garcons Embossed Polka Dot Wallet, $270 USD, available at Opening Ceremony

Vancouver Fashion Jobs – Girl’s Night Out

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Call your best gals, grab your cutest skirts and sandals, and hit the town. There’s a lot to do in Vancouver, especially in the summer.A night (or day) on the town could mean an outdoor margherita on Bridges patio, a delicious glass of wine at the Alibi Room, or a picnic at Kits beach.

Wear something sweet, simple, and bright for summer. You want to be comfy enough to walk 4th ave or Main, and dressed well enough to grab a drink at the Boathouse. The cropped blazer is a great piece to take a casual look into a nighttime appropriate outfit. Flat sandals are comfy enough to walk around in, but cute enough to wear out. The oversized handbag is sleek enough for the evening, and big enough for a small bag of makeup and a scarf in case it gets a little chilly. You don’t need to wear athletic gear to be comfortable ladies, it’s all in the details.

1. Anthropologie Blazer, $150
2. Forever 21 Bracelet, $11
3. Melie Bianco Handbag, available at Piperlime, $80
4. Wilfred Top, available at Aritzia, $55
5. Topshop Skirt, $45
6. Aldo Sandals, $60

Toronto Fashion Jobs – Wish You Were Here

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

It’s been a long time coming, but the weather is finally beginning to show some signs of warmth. Though these sporadic little bursts of sunshine are intermixed with plenty of grey skies and rain, it does feel like summer is finally on the horizon.

Many of you are undoubtedly making getaways to sunny destinations to kick-start this return to summer. Though vacation-dressing can be pretty simple in theory (summer dress + sandals + sunglasses and you’re usually done), there’s no reason why you can’t up the ante and add a fashionable edge to your look either! Whether that means playing with bold stripes or throwing in some chic accessories to tie the whole look together, we’ve got you covered with inspiration from the following two summer looks:

Hollywood actress, model, and Chanel muse Diane Kruger is photographed here in St. Tropez last year at a Karl Lagerfeld-hosted bocce tournament. Though she’s still comfortable and entirely warm-weather appropriate, Diane manages to look exceptionally chic by paying attention to the little details in her outfit. Tying your braid or ponytail with a simple ribbon (which can be found for next to nothing at any fabric store) gives your look a retro-inspired, coquettish vibe.

1. Zowie Skirt, Club Monaco $119

2. Wilfred Karol Tank, Aritzia $65
3. Jessica Simpson Sandals, Sterling $114.95
4. Straw Fedora, Gap $29.95

Joana of Rio de Janeiro (captured here by Garance Doré ) perfectly exemplifies ideal beach-side style. This time, it really is as easy as throwing together three pieces. The key is to have standout pieces and to throw them together without abandon. Bright colours or patterns do the trick nicely.

1. Scosha Necklace, Club Monaco $59
2. Kimchi Blue Straw Doctor Bag, Urban Outfitters $58
3. Cooperative Tank Dress, Urban Outfitters $49
4. Rothrock Sandals, Aldo $40
